ACPM programs and initiatives address a wide range of important disease prevention and public health issues important to our members. Initiatives focus on the health of individuals, communities, and defined populations. We also publish position statements on critical preventive medicine issues to exert a positive influence on policy, practice, and research.

Position Statements

ACPM coordinates the development of position statements which outline the College’s perspective on critical preventive medicine issues. Policy Issues

ACPM develops and advocates for public and practice policies consistent with scientific principles of the discipline of preventive medicine. We publish policy resolutions which describe and endorse a defined course of action for a particular individual, organization, event, or piece of legislation. Members provide a great deal of support prioritizing issues and enacting change.

National Violence Prevention Network

The National Violence Prevention Network is a broad-based coalition of local, state, and national organizations dedicated to violent death prevention by advocating for the full implementation of the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) in the United States.

Lifestyle Medicine

ACPM believes lifestyle medicine is a core competency of preventive medicine and supports the continued exploration of the scientific basis, best practices, and need for education in lifestyle medicine. As the discipline continues to mature, ACPM and key stakeholders will play an important role in ensuring lifestyle medicine practices and programs are based on proven and effective methods of preventing and controlling disease.

Weight Management

The ACPM Weight Management Certification program provides non-profit and for-profit organizations with the opportunity to promote their products as meeting ACPM’s rigorous, evidence-based standards for health promotion and weight management.

CDC Funded Projects

Health Systems Transformation

The main focus of the cooperative agreement is to include professional development in health systems transformation (HST) on topics including, financing and service delivery reform, preventive medicine leadership in health systems transformation, policy drivers, among others. Project activities include developing educational materials, hosting regional meetings, hosting a day-long institute and webinar on health systems transformation. All these events are available for CME.

CPT Code for Falls Prevention

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, housed within CDC, has awarded a grant to ACPM to establish reimbursable CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes to screen and assess for falls in the older adult population. This is necessary for healthcare providers to be directly reimbursed for activities in support of fall prevention and to support promotional activities to encourage fall prevention in clinical settings. This project is currently in progress.

ACPM has received a grant create and deliver new lifestyle medicine education modules for providers in the CDC WISEWOMAN (Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation) program. During the one-year project, ACPM will research, develop, and disseminate new lifestyle medicine curriculum modules and educational materials designed specifically for the needs of WISEWOMAN providers. The curriculum modules will be made available for CME.

Childhood Injury Risk Assessment Tool

Completed in March 2014, this tool is designed to help home visitors start a conversation with families and educate them on major causes of injury in the home. It includes assessment questions, educational topics, and references for home visitors to gain additional background knowledge on each injury topic.
