ACPM's position on supporting careful review of experts on vaccine advisory panels, emphasizing the importance of a commitment to transparency and public health.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM), representing nearly 2,000 physicians board-certified in preventive medicine, emphasizes the need for qualified, clinical and population-health expertise in maintaining and navigating the complexities of immunization recommendations. Reform of the CDC Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) must guarantee evidence-based recommendations, guided by safety and efficacy, and provide education to ensure individuals understand the benefit-to-risk profiles for immunizations and are able to make informed decisions surrounding vaccines for the health of themselves and their families.

ACPM supports health advisory committee selection processes that prioritize experts with proven track records in immunization safety and efficacy, as well as transparency, and encourages policymakers to consider board-certified preventive medicine physicians as willing specialists dedicated to informing the population on the protection offered as a result of evidence-based immunization practices. In addition to encouraging an evidence-based national vaccine policy, ACPM also remains committed to supporting chronic disease prevention, emergency preparedness and public health resilience – which will require continued collaboration between federal, state and local governments, organized medicine, academia and the private sector, all of which will be needed to address data modernization efforts, primary prevention initiatives and education.
