ACPM Comments on USDA Rule for School Nutrition Standards
Comment – January 26, 2018

ACPM submitted a comment on Friday to the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service opposing the interim final rule, "Child Nutrition Programs: Flexibilities for Milk, Whole Grains, and Sodium Requirements." ACPM urged the USDA to not weaken the 2012 updates to school nutrition standards and to continue enforcement of standards that will benefit the health of school-aged children.


Medical Nutrition Therapy

This online elective offers an introduction to medical nutrition therapy with a lifestyle medicine approach. Medical nutrition therapy is defined, along with descriptions of plant-based approaches to be used as part of prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The participants will also learn basic constructs of a variety of specific topics, such as calcium and B12, in addition to broader treatment prescriptions and behavioral approaches. Case studies reinforce these introductory lessons.

Culinary Medicine Elective

This online elective introduces health care providers to culinary medicine, the practice of helping patients use nutrition and good cooking habits to restore and maintain health. The emphasis is on provider education and how to personally adopt the self-care practices to improve your ability to counsel and empower patients to make and sustain healthier food choices through shopping and meal preparation. Also provided are instructional and recipe demonstration videos featuring simple cooking tips and easy-to-prepare, delicious meals and snacks.

Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program

This online education program provides a comprehensive introduction to lifestyle medicine, the evidence-based therapeutic approach to prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Featured are comprehensive lifestyle interventions—including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support and environmental exposures—which address underlying disease risks, thereby decreasing illness burden and improving clinical outcomes within value-based medicine.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Go further with food. National Nutrition Month 2018

Every year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics leads the National Nutrition Month® campaign, focusing attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The 2018 campaign theme is "Go Further with Food." Whether it's starting the day with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, planning and preparing meals and snacks in advance can help improve your health, save money, and also reduce food waste.

Key Messages
  • Include a variety of healthful foods from all of the food groups on a regular basis.
  • Consider the foods you have on hand before buying more at the store.
  • Buy only the amount that can be eaten or frozen within a few days and plan ways to use leftovers later in the week.
  • Be mindful of portion sizes. Eat and drink the amount that’s right for you, as MyPlate encourages us to do.
  • Continue to use good food safety practices.
  • Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week.
  • Realize the benefits of healthy eating by consulting with a registered dietitian nutritionist. RDNs can provide sound, easy-to-follow personalized nutrition advice to meet your lifestyle, preferences and health-related needs.
