Lifestyle Medicine Program Coursework

The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program is a continuing medical education course providing a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of lifestyle medicine. Now fully updated for the 2nd edition and available through ACPM’s new learning platform, the curriculum is designed for medical professionals looking to learn evidence-based therapeutic interventions that prevent, treat, and reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases.

Why is this program essential?

Traditional medical education does not include adequate training about nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support, and environmental pressure—all critical considerations for helping patients and populations maintain health and prevent disease. Additionally, physicians cite their inadequate confidence and lack of knowledge and skill as major barriers to counseling patients about lifestyle interventions (JAMA. 2010;304(2):202-203).

The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program helps fill this gap and equips medical professionals with evidence-based principles and interventions that address underlying disease risks and can be employed in the clinical setting or integrated into health programs or policies.

The emphasis is on provider education and how to personally adopt the self-care practices to improve your ability to counsel and empower patients to make and sustain healthier food choices through shopping and meal preparation. Also provided are instructional and recipe demonstration videos featuring simple cooking tips and easy-to-prepare, delicious meals and snacks.
