Lifestyle Medicine Program Coursework

The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program is a continuing medical education course providing a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of lifestyle medicine. Now fully updated for the 2nd edition and available through ACPM’s new learning platform, the curriculum is designed for medical professionals looking to learn evidence-based therapeutic interventions that prevent, treat, and reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases.

Why is this program essential?

Traditional medical education does not include adequate training about nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support, and environmental pressure—all critical considerations for helping patients and populations maintain health and prevent disease. Additionally, physicians cite their inadequate confidence and lack of knowledge and skill as major barriers to counseling patients about lifestyle interventions (JAMA. 2010;304(2):202-203).

The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program helps fill this gap and equips medical professionals with evidence-based principles and interventions that address underlying disease risks and can be employed in the clinical setting or integrated into health programs or policies.

Who should enroll in this program?
  • Applicable for doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, health coaches, and health professionals.
  • Chief medical officers, accountable care organizations, commercial payers, as well as practitioners involved in value-based contracts, those that accept Medicare and Medicaid, and those practicing population-based medicine and preventive medicine.
  • Participants can earn up to 32 CME with the full program or may select individual courses and additional electives.
  • Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is also available for select medical specialties.

Why should I enroll?
  • This program follows the recommended foundational approach to preventing and treating chronic diseases caused or exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle choices.
  • Participants find the core competencies and evidence-based interventions of lifestyle medicine essential to their efforts to prevent disease and keep patients and communities healthy.
  • Physicians in clinical practice—particularly within an Accountable Care Organization or value-based care/capitated payment system—will benefit from the expanded emphasis on clinical applications and case studies, better enabling them to address lifestyle-driven diseases with patients while supporting the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act's (MACRA) team-based care goals.
  • For physicians and clinicians working in academia, research and public health policy, the program’s extensive evidence-base provides the foundational knowledge to comprehend and apply lifestyle medicine concepts to chronic disease prevention and policy for whole populations. It also illuminates the important inter-relationships among these lifestyle factors.
