Lifestyle Medicine is Preventive Medicine

Lifestyle medicine is the evidence-based therapeutic approach to prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases.

At its heart are a set of core competencies and the use of comprehensive lifestyle interventions to address underlying disease risks—thereby decreasing illness burden and improving clinical outcomes within value-based medicine. Lifestyle interventions are designed to address behavior related to nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support, and environmental exposures.

Preventive Medicine strives to maintain health and prevent disease in patients and populations. Addressing lifestyle is an important aspect to achieving this goal and ACPM is committed to equipping clinicians with the skills and confidence to counsel patients about lifestyle and behavior interventions.

Our Initiative

ACPM considers lifestyle medicine to be a core competency of preventive medicine and supports the continued exploration of the scientific basis, best practices, and need for education in lifestyle medicine.

Taking a leading role in advancing this specialty, ACPM jointly led a national consensus panel with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine that published a set of core competencies in JAMA and convened a working group to identify strategies for furthering the adoption of lifestyle medicine competencies into practice. ACPM continues to advance lifestyle medicine by developing and providing education and information resources through CDC-Funded projects and other partnerships and collaborations.

Continuing Medical Education – The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program is ACPM's flagship effort to encourage the adoption of the lifestyle medicine core competencies into practice. The first-of-its-kind continuing medical education curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles of lifestyle medicine for physicians, nurses, and a wide range of health professionals dedicated to prevention and public health.

Medical Education – ACPM supports the adoption of lifestyle medicine education into medical school training and practice. Our efforts have included hosting a Capitol Hill briefing and successfully getting the American Medical Association House of Delegates to adopt a policy resolution.

Research and Evidence Base – As the discipline continues to mature, ACPM and key stakeholders will continue to play an important role in ensuring lifestyle medicine practices and programs are based on proven and effective methods of preventing and controlling disease. Learn more about the core competencies, evidence base, and implementation strategies from essential lifestyle medicine research and scholarship.

News and Updates – ACPM provides medical professionals with the latest lifestyle medicine news and opportunities through a monthly email newsletter. Subscribe to stay current with this growing field and distribute relevant lifestyle medicine information to our members and readership.
