American Medical Association

ACPM is a leading advocate for public health and prevention policy within the American Medical Association (AMA). AMA policy is developed through a democratic process that brings together informed viewpoints on issues important to physicians and the patients they serve. The seat of AMA policy making is the AMA House of Delegates (HoD), where state, local, and specialty society representatives set policy through a consensus-building process. The end result is the creation of policies that direct AMA's immediate work activities, as well as provide progress toward reaching AMA’s long-term vision.

As a national medical specialty society credentialed in the House of Delegates, ACPM is able to sponsor and advocate for resolutions and other policy recommendations for adoption by organized medicine. In addition, ACPM coordinates and participates in the AMA’s Section Council on Preventive Medicine.

AMA Resolutions

As an organization, ACPM may choose to sponsor or co-sponsor policy resolutions at AMA’s House of Delegates semi-annual meetings. With delegate status in the AMA HoD, ACPM can introduce and advocate for preventive medicine-related policies for organized medicine. As a member of the AMA Section Council on Preventive Medicine, ACPM can work with other preventive medicine specialty societies and public health organizations on joint advocacy for AMA policies.

ACPM encourages all members to be involved in the policy-making process. To find policies AMA has on record, visit its Policy Finder. If the AMA does not have a policy on a topic for which you think ACPM should submit a resolution, contact Kate McFadyenACPM submits resolutions on a wide range of issues related to preventive medicine, but is keenly interested in resolutions that advance ACPM’s strategic priority to elevate preventive medicine and population health in Health Systems Transformation. Section Council on Preventive Medicine

The official role of the Section Council on Preventive Medicine (SCPM), as with other section councils of AMA, is to provide a caucus for the specialty societies in related areas, in this case those areas committed to advancement of one or more of the specialty areas of preventive medicine. The SCPM is dedicated to help AMA establish, promote, and implement strengthened preventive medicine policies, practices, and activities, and to encourage and facilitate cooperation among the SCPM’s component organizations and other related organizations and individuals interested in and committed to the objectives of preventive medicine.
