The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is committed to the power of prevention, and preventing violent injury and death is no exception to that goal. Our efforts center around supporting a robust evidence-base for violence prevention initiatives and population-scale violence prevention approaches with our partners.

The Effects of Violence

ACPM is a leader in violence prevention through supporting the critical role of data collection and analysis to craft violence prevention strategies and direct the right resources to our communities.

Unfortunately, statistics and information regarding violence in the United States is staggering:

  • More than 64,000 Americans are victims of violent deaths per year.

    • Violent death includes: homicide, suicide, domestic violence, abuse and neglect, gang violence, and other causes.

  • Families and communities across the country are emotionally, physically, and psychologically broken by violence.

  • Homicide and suicide alone cost the U.S. economy $87 billion in lost work hours and medical expenses.

  • Violence depletes social services, property values, and safe community structures.

ACPM believes in continuing to improve the reporting, research, and data regarding violence. Together, we can shape prevention-based initiatives to limit violent death and injury and create a safer, stronger and more resilient society.

Evidence-Based Violence Prevention Programs

ACPM is the convener of the National Violence Prevention Network (NVPN), a broad-based coalition of local, state, and national organizations advocating for the full implementation of the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) in all states, districts, and territories of the United States.

Network member organizations work together to generate support for the NVDRS by educating policymakers, other national organizations, and the general public on the benefits of placing an omnichannel presence on fact collection. That information is synced with comprehensive system management that can be used by main stakeholders to save lives.

The National Violence Prevention Network also advocates for federal funding in support of research studies that use NVDRS data to inform public policy and public health interventions.
