PM21: Building Social Justice and Health Equity: Understanding Our Past, Surviving COVID-19 Pandemic, Optimally Thriving in Our Future

About the Program

Covid-19 has put a spotlight on health inequities and the impact of social injustices on Black, Indigenous and Latino communities of color. This session highlights how systemic racism has affected American health care, the health disparities laid bare by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the current health equity efforts to tackle these issues. Participants will better understand medical apartheid and the past and present factors contributing to broken trust in historically excluded groups as well as the imperatives around diversity and inclusion in health care. The session will also focus on key components of the U.S. Surgeon General’s first report on community health and economic prosperity and will explain the U.S. health disadvantage and strategies to improve healthcare access.
