Mike Barry is the chief staff executive for American College of Preventive Medicine responsible for carrying out the College’s mission to provide leadership in the science, policy, and practice of preventive medicine. He is responsible for education, policy development, business development, and financial management of the organization. These activities include: leading the organization’s membership recruitment, development, and retention efforts; ensuring that ACPM’s continuing medical education activities meet the standards established by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education; overseeing the organization’s education and advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill; administering grants and cooperative agreements with federal agencies, foundations, and private sector partners to carry out a wide range of health promotion and public policy activities; overseeing the planning and convening of the annual Preventive Medicine meeting, the nation’s premier conference covering important preventive medicine topics; serving as Assistant Secretary for the American Journal of Preventive Medicine Board of Governors; and developing and maintaining close relationships with many like-minded organizations, including a wide variety of medical societies, numerous public health non-governmental organizations, and industry partners.

Prior to being appointed Executive Director in 2005, Mr. Barry served as Deputy Director for ACPM for five years, directing many of the College’s grants and cooperative agreements, overseeing policy development and advocacy, carrying out research and educational projects, and grant writing and fundraising.

Mr. Barry has over 30 years' experience conducting research, education, and technical assistance focused on strengthening public health and prevention services. He worked at PHF for 14 years, where he began as a statistical assistant collecting and analyzing public health data and advanced to a member of the PHF senior management team, overseeing PHF’s health policy and information projects and activities. He was the issue editor for the September 2000 edition of the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice focused on public health performance measurement, and later received an Exemplary Service Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for his work on the National Public Health Performance Standards Program.
