Several new medical education electives are now being offered as part of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program. Each is available as a stand-alone course or counts toward the 30 hours of CME required to obtain a certificate of completion.

Introduction to Culinary Medicine

This elective introduces health care providers to culinary medicine, the practice of helping patients use nutrition and good cooking habits to restore and maintain health. The emphasis is on provider education and how to personally adopt the self-care practices to improve your ability to counsel and empower patients to make and sustain healthier food choices through shopping and meal preparation. Also provided are instructional and recipe demonstration videos featuring simple cooking tips and easy-to-prepare, delicious meals and snacks.

Reducing CVD Risk & Health Disparities

This elective is comprised of four modules that focus on reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors—such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity, inactivity, diabetes, and smoking—among women identified by the WISEWOMAN program for being at high risk. The modules include evidence- and practice-based content created by expert faculty in cardiology, primary care, and family and lifestyle medicine.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

This elective offers an introduction to medical nutrition therapy with a lifestyle medicine approach. Medical nutrition therapy is defined, along with descriptions of plant-based approaches to be used as part of prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The participants will also learn basic constructs of a variety of specific topics, such as calcium and B12, in addition to broader treatment prescriptions and behavioral approaches. Case studies will reinforce these introductory lessons.
