Special Speaking Opportunity on CDC Tobacco Webinar on Billing and Reimbursement

ACPM is supporting an upcoming 6|18 Initiative learning opportunity organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is seeking two ACPM members to participate.

WHAT: A webinar entitled, 'Exploring Barriers to Tobacco Cessation Billing and Reimbursement

WHEN: Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

TIME: 2:30-4:00 PM ET

PURPOSE: The intent of the call is to address implementation and payment barriers to receiving tobacco cessation benefits and services. The discussion will be centered on a case study on which a set of questions will be posed related to access and reimbursement for tobacco cessation counseling and treatment.

SELECTION CRITERIA: ACPM will select two physicians who meet the following criteria:
  • Be a current ACPM member
  • Have practical experience and expertise in both counseling and prescribing for tobacco cessation at the delivery system level;
  • Be comfortable speaking from the experience of multiple physician perspectives (e.g.: solo service provider, multi-site physician group that has different type of contracts, integrated network or health system); and
  • Be prepared to share examples from your practice of barriers to successful billing and reimbursement for tobacco cessation counseling and medication.


FORMAT: The call will feature a brief hypothetical case study that will be divided into multiple parts, with time between each section for discussants to share their perspective. The physician discussants will participate in a 3- or 4-member panel reflecting a multi-sector perspective.

Each panel member will be asked to provide a 1- to 2-minute verbal response to questions posed in each section of the case study. Each discussant will be asked to participate in the cross panel follow up discussion, with moderator prompts. The questions and case study will be provided before the call.

A sample of key questions to a provider are listed below: 

  • What are the perceived barriers or limits that a provider considers when prescribing tobacco cessation treatments or counseling services?
  • What barriers does a provider encounter when attempting to bill and receive appropriate reimbursement for patient encounters and referrals?

MATERIALS PROVIDED: In advance of the call, each discussant will receive the case study along with questions that have been developed for each section. 

TIME COMMITTMENT: Each discussant would be invited to a dry run that will be scheduled the week prior to the call to rehearse the format and responses with other discussants and ask questions. All will be expected to sign on to the call 15 minutes in advance and be available to participate throughout the 1.5-hour event.

CME: CME will not be offered for this event.
