Volunteer Opportunities

The lifeblood of ACPM is the work of the many members who volunteer their time, expertise, and knowledge to the College. Enhance your career while advancing Preventive Medicine and ACPM!

Below is a listing of open and general volunteer opportunities available to ACPM members. Learn more about each and follow application instructions. Most applications can be submitted by completing the interest form at the bottom of this page.

ACPM Groups

  • Strategy and Board Development Committee – The Strategy and Board Development Committee is seeking volunteers to serve on the committee starting June/July 2018. The committee is tasked with both developing and administering ACPM's leadership pipeline and updating and implementing the College's strategic plan. The committee is looking for active members of the College who can represent the many different constituents of the College. Experience in professional development and strategic planning is preferred but not required. All members of the College are eligible for service. The committee will meet 1-2 times per month via teleconference and once in person during the annual Preventive Medicine conference. Interested members should email Ben Butz (bbutz@acpm.org) at their earliest convenience.  
  • Policy Committee  The ACPM Policy Committee is accepting applications for new members. The committee is charged with recommending legislative initiatives, policy positions, and advocacy strategies to the ACPM Board of Regents. Members serve 2-year terms which can be renewed up to two times. Committee members, including Chair Samuel Peik, plan to meet in-person at Preventive Medicine 2018 in Chicago and prospective members are encouraged to attend.   • Medical Student Section – ACPM is seeking motivated ACPM student members to participate on the Medical Student Section. Duties include acting as a sounding board for ACPM initiatives, representing the College and preventive medicine on your university campus, and disseminating important preventive medicine resources as needed. Commitment is for one year. Second year medical students are encouraged to apply, but all are welcome! To apply, complete the interest form.
  • Global Preventive Medicine Special Interest Group – A new special interest group to address issues in global health is being organized by ACPM members. Those with an interest in the topic are encouraged to complete the interest form and participate in an inaugural in-person gathering at Preventive Medicine 2018.
  • Healthy Aging Special Interest Group – A new special interest group to address issues in healthy aging is being organized by ACPM members. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 24 at Preventive Medicine 2018. ACPM members with an interest in the topic and participating in the group are encouraged to complete the interest form at their earliest convenience.
  • ACPM Podcast Series – The ACPM Resident Physician Section (RPS) is seeking preventive medicine physicians to share stories about their professional experiences as part of a new podcast series exploring careers in Preventive Medicine. The series aims to inspire and educate medical students, physicians in other specialties, and the public about the diverse professional opportunities available in Preventive Medicine. The RPS is also seeking volunteers—from any career stage—who would like to contribute to the execution and growth of the podcast series. For additional information or to volunteer as a contributor or interviewee, contact RPS VP of Communications Margarita Ramos (margarita.s.ramos@gmail.com).

Members may complete the interest form join one of ACPM's committees, sections, academies, or special interest groups. Most groups are open to all members and appointments are typically made in conjunction with the annual meeting. Watch for future calls for volunteers!

ACPM PROJECTS

  • Brain Health Peer Review Committee – ACPM is seeking three members with expertise in brain health, age-related cognitive decline, dementia, and associated evidence-based interventions to serve on a peer review committee. Committee volunteers will review and provide constructive feedback on the first draft of a new continuing education module on brain health, titled 'Lifestyle Medicine and Prevention of Age Related Cognitive Decline and Dementia.' If you would like to serve on the committee, please send your contact information, current CV/resume, and a brief interest statement to Shannon Haworth (shaworth@acpm.org) by Friday, May 18. Participants will receive confirmation of their participation and related materials on May 31 and are expected to return their feedback by June 8. ACPM is offering an honorarium of $1000 to each committee member after the completion of the review process.

Preventive Medicine 2018

  • Poster / Abstract Judges – ACPM is seeking judges to review scientific posters and oral abstracts at Preventive Medicine 2018. Reviewers must be registered for the meeting, complete training to serve as a judge, and attend all required dates and sessions. Residents and medical students are not eligible to serve as judges. Apply using the interest form below.

External Opportunities

  • PTSD Guideline Review – The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) has invited ACPM to review its latest Occupational Medicine Practice Guideline: “Workplace Mental Health Guideline: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder.” Issues with specific recommendations should be supported with high quality evidence for consideration – including suggested alternative recommendations, restated recommendations or 'dissenting' views. It is not required that reviewers submit rewritten or highly edited passages. A comment linked to a section, recommendation, or page number and paragraph is generally sufficient. Reviewers need to complete a confidentiality agreement / disclosure statement and review sheet, and complete their review by Friday, June 15.   • Otsuka Fellowship – With ACPM serving as a recruiting partner, Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. is seeking early and mid-career preventive medicine physicians for a 2-year clinical safety and pharmacovigilance fellowship. Physicians working with Otsuka use their skills to support research, development, adoption, and utilization of pharmaceutical and device products worldwide. Participants gain exposure to and develop a broad expertise in global product safety. This 2-year fellowship is based at Otsuka's American headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey. Salary is $130k-140k per year. Interested applicants should apply through ACPM by completing the fellowship application form. An updated CV and a cover letter noting your specific qualifications are required. Applications are due May 18. 
  • Papers on Population Improvements – The CDC's Preventing Chronic Disease journal invites authors to submit manuscripts on research, evaluation, and other work describing innovative and effective work to link health care and community health in ways that improve population health. Manuscripts should be submitted to the journal on or before November 16. Complete details about this call for papers and submission details on the publication's website.
