Partner with ACPM to Recruit Preventive Medicine Physicians

ACPM is partnering with health systems and insurers to place early- and mid-career preventive medicine physicians in short- and longer-term fellowship positions to address population health, payment reform, and health systems transformation.

New Challenges

Healthcare delivery systems and insurers are increasingly challenged by the bold aspirations and movement toward the Triple Aim of improving health, improving care, and reducing the cost of care. As 'volume to value' payment models grow—including bundled payments, at-risk contracting, accountable care organizations, Medicare Advantage, and direct payment models—the need to design and execute systems-based approaches to improve health and health care are more critical than ever.

ACPM, as the national medical specialty which comprises physicians trained in and practicing systems-based approaching to health care, can coordinate experiences for physicians which assist health care and insurance organizations to meet these changes and opportunities. ACPM has been recognized by the CDC for its leadership by recent cooperative agreements to better prepare physicians to accelerate health systems transformation and the management of costly chronic diseases.

Why Preventive Medicine Physicians?

Healthcare delivery systems can benefit from population-based competent physicians trained in epidemiology, public health, and value-based health care. Preventive medicine physicians, by providing analytic skills, behavioral health perspectives, and primary/secondary/tertiary prevention competencies, can build the skills that can lead and assist in the development of effective health intervention strategies to improve the Triple Aim.

The growing understanding of the clinical, behavioral and economic impact of social determinants of health similarly creates a demand for physician leaders who can provide linkages and programs that connect to the community to provide better prevention, care coordination, and reduction in unnecessary care such as readmissions. Preventive medicine physicians can provide better understanding of and engagement with:

  • Social support services in the community
  • Housing agencies;
  • Healthy options for eating and activity;
  • Adequate dental care;
  • Primary and secondary education programs that encourage healthy lifestyles;
  • Injury and violent crime reduction; and
  • Environmental strategies to ensure that communities have clean air and water.

Working with your health system, preventive medicine physicians will use their population health skills to help improve patient outcomes, enhance the patient experience, and reduce disparities, costs and quality of care. Successful candidates—identified by ACPM—will apply the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals.
