Building Your Organization

On behalf of the College, I am pleased to introduce you to the first issue of ACPM News. This monthly newsletter will bring you the latest information about the activities of the College, its leaders, and its members, with the goal of providing a more personal touch to the content, including a rotation of regular feature columns from the executive director and the President as well as occasional guest columns from the members.  

The start of a new year always is a good time to reflect back on the year just passed, as we aim to build on our accomplishments, and learn from our challenges and mistakes, in the year(s) ahead.  As you read on, I hope you will feel that ACPM is building the type of organization you want to be part of, and invest in, going forward. 

Looking back

Because of your support and participation, 2015 was an exceptional year for ACPM.  I will highlight some of our key accomplishments in the context of ACPM’s strategic plan.

Putting Prevention Front and Center

The first pillar of the plan calls on ACPM to promote the specialty of Preventive Medicine and preventive medicine physicians to assure an appropriate supply and demand for the effective and efficient delivery of health and health care.  Central to this pillar, ACPM is leading a long-term strategic initiative to infuse population health in health care systems.  Specifically, we have been developing a comprehensive communications plan to strengthen the brand of the specialty and preventive medicine physicians, particularly within the context of health systems transformation (HST). 

ACPM’s cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has enabled us to further advance our work in this area, convening two regional summits to advance the role of preventive medicine in HST and organizing a day-long learning institute to build physician competencies in HST. 

Increasing ACPM’s international presence also is an objective under this first pillar.  ACPM signed affiliate agreements with two international organizations in 2015 – the European Society of Lifestyle Medicine and the Public Health Physicians of Canada.

Lastly, securing a stable funding source for PM training continues to be an important goal under this pillar.  In 2015, ACPM secured a $5 million increase in dedicated federal funding for Preventive Medicine (PM) residency training, increasing the total number of funded programs to a high-water mark of 25.  ACPM’s advocacy also has been strongly felt on Capitol Hill in support of public health funding, reimbursement for clinical prevention and lifestyle medicine, and violence prevention. 

Advancing Science in Real World Practice

The second pillar calls on ACPM to promote the advancement of scientific knowledge in preventive medicine through multi-disciplinary education, collaboration, and communication.  The key initiative under this pillar is to establish ACPM as the leading national specialty society for advancing community-level promotion of healthy lifestyles and lifestyle medicine.  As such, a major focus for ACPM in 2015 was on refining, piloting, and scaling its 30-hour CME lifestyle medicine curriculum for delivery to health care providers, systems, and payers. The curriculum, set for launch at Preventive Medicine 2016, has been approved by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit. 

While the merger of ACPM and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) did not go forward, the organizations are partnering on the delivery of the curriculum and further exploring areas of natural synergy to advance lifestyle medicine and promotion of healthy lifestyles. 

ACPM continues to build relationships with various offices and centers of the CDC as it aims to promote the science of preventive medicine.  CDC-funded projects in falls prevention and lifestyle medicine training for providers of women’s heart disease and stroke prevention services in underserved communities are examples of the growing impact of ACPM’s partnership with CDC in 2015.

Enhancing Value for Our Members

The third, and perhaps most important, pillar calls on ACPM to enhance member value by serving as the primary source for members to meet their professional needs and credentialing requirements through education, career development and practice tools.  To effectively enhance the value of your membership, we first asked you, the owners of the College, to tell us how we’re doing and where we’re falling short.  The results of this needs assessment were incredibly enlightening, as we learned more about what you do, what information and services you use and value, and where are the biggest gaps between what you want and what ACPM is delivering.  We also learned that many of you still strongly value the physician-only membership model of the College, but are open to collaborative models within ACPM that allow engagement with allied health and other non-physician health professionals who are part of the prevention team.

The needs assessment also reaffirmed how important ACPM’s educational offerings are to you.  In 2015 ACPM was awarded a new four-year accreditation to provide CME, and in the process met the advanced criteria for “accreditation with commendation.”  We also expanded and improved our MOC offerings.  This enhanced educational capacity was on display across all of our educational programs, including our marquis meetings, Preventive Medicine 2015 and Preventive Medicine Board Review Course, our first-ever Healthy Aging Summit, and our wide array of online offerings. 

In response to the needs you identified, we have begun offering more opportunities to engage with the organization, participate in professional opportunities to advance preventive medicine and your careers, and more easily navigate your credentialing requirements.  These efforts will continue throughout 2016 and beyond, and I want to hear from you on how we are doing.  

Positioning the College for the Long Term

Pillar 4 is about ACPM maintaining and enhancing its institutional stature and credibility and its trust with the public through financial and professional integrity, including good management and business practices and promulgation of adherence to its ethical codes and policies.  A big part of this goal has been rebuilding the organization’s governance, infrastructure, competencies, and systems to allow for a more streamlined, competency-based Board focused on strategy development and a staff better equipped to execute strategy and develop and manage programs.  While implementing an overhaul of the Board, adopting a revised set of bylaws, and overhauling the policy manual are not “sexy” accomplishments, they have proven critical to our success. 

Perhaps a more exciting component of this strategic pillar is our Business Innovation initiative.  The goal is to identify business opportunities to drive ACPM value creation in health systems, population health, and lifestyle medicine.  One of the ways ACPM is meeting this objective is through the continued growth of its Corporate Roundtable (CR) and cultivation of relationships with industry partners.  For example, ACPM and its CR members organized the full-day event, “Building Community Health and Wellbeing through Business, Culture, and Policy,” which will be held February 23 in Washington, DC. 

Looking ahead

As you can see, ACPM is working tirelessly to build an organization that members are proud to call their “home.”  Several innovations to enhance member value and engagement have already been implemented or are underway.  This newsletter is one example.  As described in my prior communication we are moving away from “one-size fits all” communications to more targeted information, customized to meet your specific needs and preferences.  We are revamping the web site with this same goal in mind, and are excited about its launch in the spring of this year.

In 2016 we will be executing our PM branding/communications plan, the first time ACPM has engaged in such a public relations effort on this scale, and we will be reaching out to you to help us as we implement this ambitious undertaking. 

Our Strategy and Board Development Committee is planning an ACPM leadership development track to help members take the next step in their career trajectories, as well as prepare them for leadership positions within the College.

Last, but definitely not least, Preventive Medicine 2016 may be our most innovative conference yet, featuring more skill-building institutes and innovative learning designs, member-driven abstract sessions, more CME opportunities, and one-stop shopping for meeting your MOC requirements. We hope you will join us to experience these innovations and learn more about the initiatives and engagement strategies mentioned in this column.

 Members in the News

ACPM Fellow, Jim Lando, MD, MPH, FACPM, will be sworn in as the Rear Admiral and Assistant Surgeon General in the United States Public Health Service.  Congratulations Dr. Lando on this great honor!

Dr. Lando's Swearing In Ceremony will take place February 5, 2016 in Chicago, IL. As the senior ranking officers in the Commissioned Corps, flag officers exemplify the core values for which Commissioned Officers of the U.S. Public Health Service are known. The provide executive level leadership within the Department and Agencies to which they are assigned. Flag officers also carry the title of Assistant Surgeon General and as such they are relied on by the Surgeon General and the Corps to support special initiatives and exhibit the highest caliber of public health leadership.


 Corporate Roundtable Spotlight

ACPM is delighted to welcome two new Corporate Roundtable members, MyLife Recovery Centers, who joins the Roundtable as a Gold-level member, and Mars Symbioscience as a Silver-level member.

MyLife Recovery Centers is a leader and pioneer in addiction recovery and the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.  The company has developed an innovative implant that allows behavioral therapy to impact more effectively. The small MyLife Recovery CenterTM medication pellets (Naltrexone) treats addiction by blocking the effects of alcohol and opioids in one dose.  Naltrexone serves as an opioid receptor antagonist and blocks receptors in the part of the brain that triggers dopamine release. Naltrexone was FDA approved in the pill form for the treatment of opiate addiction in 1984, and alcohol addiction in 1995. The American College of Preventive Medicine Corporate Roundtable consists of mission-aligned private sector organizations who work with the ACPM on issues related to population health, preventive and lifestyle medicine.  ACPM Corporate Roundtable  members meet twice annually with the ACPM Board of Regents and on various projects throughout the year. In its transactions with Corporate Roundtable members and other industry partners, ACPM commits that its educational activities, scientific programs, products, services and advocacy positions are independent of Company influence, and, likewise, ACPM in no way endorses the products or services of said Companies. ACPM has developed and adopted its own Guidelines for Relationships Between ACPM and Private Corporations, and endorsed the CMSS Code for Interactions with Companies to foster such independence.

 Latest Happenings



The ACPM Board of Regents during its December teleconference approved a proposal to encourage ACPM affiliates, academies, and membership sections of the College to appoint a formal liaison to the Board.  The proposal was put forward by ACPM President Dan Blumenthal in response to a number of recommendations he has received regarding the desirability of having representation of, or at least input from, various constituencies on the Board.

The requests in large part have been a result of implementing ACPM’s governance reform package over the past three years, which has reduced the number of Regents from 16 to 12 and eliminated representation by categorical constituency (e.g., geographic, specialty, membership group).  These changes were made in order to create a more nimble, competency-based Board.   

Once appointed, liaisons will be expected to attend meetings of the Board; participate in conference calls with the Board; and keep the leadership of their section, affiliate organization, or component academy apprised of the deliberations and decisions of the Board.  Liaisons also may petition the Secretary of the College for the opportunity to present issues of importance to the Board.    

The Board will be considering adoption of a formal liaison policy at its upcoming meeting on February 24.


ACPM is pleased to announce it has signed a new affiliation agreement with the Public Health Physicians of Canada (PHPC).  The PHPC is the national specialty society of Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist physicians in Canada. Under the agreement, “PHPC and ACPM want to co-operate in order to build an alliance and concentrate knowledge and resources with the aim to advance public health and preventive medicine as a specialty, support education of health professionals with a population and public health perspective, advocate for healthy public policies, and encourage knowledge creation and translation with a view to improving health and health equity.”

Specifically, the two organizations will encourage their members who qualify to join and actively participate in the work of the other organization; engage in cross- and joint-marketing of the other organization’s products and services; interact on social media platforms; encourage their members to engage in joint research projects; co-sponsor each other’s conferences; from time to time collaborate on joint conferences, educational initiatives, and policy development and advocacy; and jointly support post-graduate training in preventive medicine.

Please consider joining your colleagues at ACPM Advocacy Day to help strengthen the preventive medicine voice in the halls of Congress!  ACPM Advocacy Day will be held on Wednesday, February 24th, in conjunction with Preventive Medicine 2016.  ACPM will schedule all congressional visits, provide briefing materials and handouts, and walk you through the ins and outs of a congressional meeting.
