Update from the NCCHC Spring Board Meeting

Posted By Sylvie Stacy, MD, MPH, Wednesday, May 16, 2018
Dr. Sylvie Stacy

Dr. Sylvie Stacy, ACPM's liaison to the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), has written a brief update on the activities of the Commission and her efforts to represent the College with partners dedicated to correctional healthcare.

I attended the NCCHC spring board of directors meeting last month as ACPM's liaison. Probably the biggest thing since my last update is that the commission has just released an updated set of Standards for Health Services for jails and prisons, which is the cornerstone of their health services accreditation program. (Both reports are available on their website's publication page and the Commission has completed its 2017 Annual Report as well.)

I have been assigned by the NCCHC to serve at one of the board's liaison representative to the board of the directors for the Academy of Correctional Health Professionals, so am now playing a bit of a role in ensuring that physicians in corrections have relevant education, mentorship, and other resources.

The commission also sent me as their representative to a meeting organized by the CDC titled "Public Health and Primary Care: Partners in Prevention," which brought together about a dozen organizations to exchange information about enhancing screening for HIV, hepatitis, STDs, and LTBI. It is great that they felt it was important to involve a correctional healthcare organization, and there was a lot of emphasis throughout the meeting on ensuring that the needs of specific populations are addressed in screening guidelines and other CDC initiatives pertaining to infectious disease screening.
