Joannie (Jo) Shen

Dr. Joannie Shen is interested in promoting population wellness, preventing aging-associated functional declines in physical, cognitive, and social domains, and empowering historically disadvantaged communities to achieve improved health.

Dr. Shen conducted clinical research at the National Institutes of Health, worked on medical device pre-market approval and post-market surveillance at the Food and Drug Administration, and provided technical support to state partners as a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She is currently consulting in international settings.

Dr. Shen has received over 20 awards for her services in public health and medical research, published as the lead author in JAMA, Medical Care, Preventive Medicine, Expert Review in Health Outcomes Research, among other peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Shen also served on the National Committee for Quality Assurance advisory panel for healthcare performance measures, taught introductory clinical medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), integrative medicine lectures in Korea with Harvard Medical International, and served as a faculty member for joint Emory/CDC executive courses in epidemiology. She served as a volunteer physician in mobile clinics in Maryland, California, on ship shelter in Mississippi post Hurricane Katrina, and was recognized as a goodwill ambassador representing California to Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

Dr. Shen earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern California (USC), two doctorates from the USC Keck School of Medicine, and a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Public Health in Health Services from the UCLA School of Public Health. She is a graduate of the CDC Preventive Medicine Program. Dr. Shen is certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, American Board of Family Medicine, and American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine.
