QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
During a recent conference call,
Steven Woolf, MD, Neal Kohatsu, MD, Linda Kinsinger, MD, Jud
Richland and Barbara Clark discussed potential quality improvement
(QI) activities for the Committee.
1) Developing articles on
implementing preventive services. Participants suggested that
articles be solicited from leaders in the QI field. AJPM editors
have expressed interest in publishing the articles in the Journal.
In discussing topics for the articles, the possibility of
complementing the work of the US Preventive Services Task Force
and Community Service Task Force was raised.
2) Hosting a conference on
quality improvement. This activity could position the College as a
leader in the quality improvement and prevention field. The
purpose of the conference would be to present results of
randomized controlled trials on QI methods, as well as "real
world" case studies, including methods that work and don’t
work. Case studies involving diverse settings and populations,
such as Indian reservations, suburbia, and community health
centers would be sought. Potential key players in the conference
and funding sources, such as Agency for Health Care Policy and
Research (AHCPR), and various foundations, were discussed. The
participants concurred that development of a one-page concept
paper should be the first step. The next step would be to approach
the "key players" about the viability of such a
conference and how to "spin" it. The paper would also be
used during discussions with potential conference participants and
donors.
3) Holding a conference similar
to the L’Esterel conference held in Canada in the late 1980s.
