Subject:              AMA Meeting Venues

Referred to:        Reference Committee F
                          (William C. Sternfeld, MD, Chair)

Whereas, The American Medical Association’s 2004 International Conference on Physician Health is scheduled to be held October 13-16, 2004 at McDonald’s “Hamburger University” in Oak Brook, Illinois; and

Whereas, Obesity is now this country’s most pressing health problem, soon to surpass tobacco as the nation’s leading killer; and

Whereas, The AMA has extensive existing policy aimed at addressing the overweight and obesity epidemic; and

Whereas, Current AMA Policy H-630.140 states that the AMA consider a hotel's smoking policy (or lack thereof) as a criterion for selecting hotels for meetings, conferences, and conventions; and

Whereas, Policy governing the selection of meeting venues should be expanded to ensure that venues do not conflict with any AMA policy; and

Whereas, There are abundant other similarly priced and similarly convenient venues available to convene this meeting; and

Whereas, Meeting venue choice may be perceived to reflect the AMA’s mission; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association not select venues that are contrary to AMA policies or missions whenever there are reasonable venue options for AMA meetings. (Modify Current HOD Policy)
