Announcing the New Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program
program logo

The American College of Preventive Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine are pleased to announce the launch of the new Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program. This online, evidence-based educational program provides a comprehensive foundation in the core competencies of Lifestyle Medicine, building upon the recommendations of a landmark JAMA article. (JAMA, July 14, 2010—Vol 304, No. 2).

What is Lifestyle Medicine – Lifestyle Medicine is the evidence-based therapeutic approach to prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Comprehensive lifestyle interventions (including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, social support and environmental exposures) address underlying disease risks, thereby decreasing illness burden and improving clinical outcomes for patients and populations.

Subjects: This 30 hour program covers the 15 core competencies of Lifestyle Medicine as endorsed by ACPM and ACLM, with detailed sections on Nutrition, Weight Management, Stress Reduction, Sleep, Behavior Change and more.

Who Can Benefit: The program is designed for doctors with an interest in learning the basic principles of Lifestyle Medicine, and is particularly pertinent for physician practices moving toward value-based reimbursement models. It is also beneficial for other health professionals including nurses, NPs, PAs, dietitians, health coaches, and other allied health professionals. It is the first curriculum that comprehensively addresses the knowledge and skill gaps doctors themselves cited as major barriers to counseling patients about lifestyle interventions (JAMA, July 14, 2010—Vol 304, No. 2).

Accreditation (CME and MOC available)

  • CME Credit: This online program for medical professionals has been designated for up to 30 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
  • MOC Credit: Through the American Board of Medical Specialties ("ABMS") and Association of American Medical Colleges' ("AAMC") joint initiative to create a wide array of Maintenance of Certification ("MOC") Activities, the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies Program has met the MOC requirements as a Part II activity by the following ABMS Member Boards: American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine.

Additional medical specialty boards are reviewing this new program for MOC credit, and ACPM will be working with the professional societies for NP’s PA’s and other allied health professionals.

ACPM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the ACCME.
