Dear ACPM Colleagues,

I would like to provide you with a brief update on our work to identify a new ACPM Executive Director. A number of important steps have been completed, and the active search for candidates is well underway.

A detailed position profile was developed based on the job description, ACPM strategy, and a key stakeholder survey (stakeholders were both internal and external to ACPM membership). The position has been announced on numerous job posting sites, and we continue to post the position based on suggestions from the search committee members. If you’d like to review the position profile and consider applying or nominating a candidate, you can find a banner right on the ACPM home page: www.acpm.org.

In the first two weeks of posting the position, our executive search firm, Association Strategies Inc (ASI) has received 55 full applications for the position. We are excited about this robust response – it truly reflects our ACPM brand recognition and reputation, and the prevailing priority of prevention in our national health conversation. We want to keep the strong initial response going!  Please continue to let your colleagues and contacts know about this important position – our members are our best sales force for our profession and for ACPM that supports us in our roles as public health and health systems leaders.

Key Dates:

  • Application deadline: March 15, 2018
  • Interview dates for semi-finalists and finalists: April 12-14 and April 27-29

While ASI continues to conduct outreach and vetting of candidates, the search committee is formulating our strategy for the interview process. We have planned two interview sessions in mid and late April for semi-finalists and finalists, respectively, and we are developing the questions and issues for discussion. Once the interviews are complete, the search committee will make a recommendation to the Executive Committee of the Board, which is tasked with negotiating the employment agreement of the Executive Director.

As a part of transition planning, ASI held extensive discussions with the ACPM staff and were very impressed with their positivity, enthusiasm, and commitment to our College.

In summary, we are on track to meet our desired time frame to introduce our new Executive Director during the May Preventive Medicine conference as well as recognize our current Executive Director, Mike Barry, for his long and distinguished career at ACPM.

I hope we will see many of you in Chicago for this exciting time and transition.

If you have any questions about or input to the process, please contact me or any of the search committee members.

Turning Over the Reins

Some decisions are more difficult than others; I recently made a most difficult one. I have notified the ACPM Board of Regents of my intent to step down at the end of my current contract. We jointly agreed to a short-term extension of my contract with the College through June 30, 2018, to allow ample time for a smooth transition to a new executive director.

The timing of this decision is right for me both professionally and personally to explore the next chapter in my career. I have been truly privileged to serve as ACPM’s executive director for the past 12 1/2 years, and be a part of this wonderful organization for the past 18 years. ACPM has had an enormous impact on my career and life, and I have been fortunate to work with so many passionate and exceptional people. I am really looking forward to continuing to serve you and the leadership over the next 6 months, and perhaps even exploring with some of you opportunities for the next chapter in my career.
