Executive Director Search Committee Update

Dear Fellow ACPM Members:

I am pleased to serve as the Chair of the ACPM Executive Director Search Committee. The committee has been meeting since early autumn. To date we have developed the framework and timeline for this important search; developed a draft position profile; selected an executive search firm to support us in this process; and launched a critical stakeholder survey.

Our immediate next steps include conducting interviews with ACPM staff, finalizing the job description and position profile, and identifying and screening candidates.

The members of the Search Committee are:

  • ACPM Board of Regents members: Dan Blumenthal, Wendy Braund, Bob Carr, Paul Jung, Joannie Shen, Stephanie Zaza (Chair)
  • ACPM members and fellows: David Ajayi, Sharon Hull, Mike Parkinson, Jim Tacci, Betsy Thompson
  • ACPM Partner: ASTHO Executive Director Mike Fraser
  • ACPM Human Resources Consultant: Bob Wolf

We were very happy to secure the executive search firm Association Strategies, Inc. in partnership with Tuft and Associates to conduct our national search for a new Executive Director. The presidents of both organizations, Pamela Kaul and Jill Christie, respectively, will lead the process for us. Pamela and Jill have already developed, conducted and analyzed a stakeholder survey that will help us to develop a complete job profile. They are also already reaching out through their networks to identify candidates.

The search committee would like to solicit your ideas about potential candidates for this position. We are interested in considering people who have experience as senior executives in the non-governmental and other organizations with which you interact. We are also interested in considering candidates from within our own profession – preventive medicine doctors who have excellent leadership, administrative, and policy skills, who might be interested in making a move to running a professional medical society. If you have ideas about potential candidates – including yourself – please send name and contact information directly to Pamela Kaul at ASI ( pamela@assnstrategies.com). ASI will contact all suggested candidates to assess their interest, provide information about the job, ascertain their qualifications, and direct them to the application materials. All such suggestions will be held in the strictest confidence.

A couple of key dates:

  • Application deadline: March 15, 2018
  • Interview dates for semi-finalists and finalists: April 12-14 and April 27-29

Turning Over the Reins

Some decisions are more difficult than others; I recently made a most difficult one. I have notified the ACPM Board of Regents of my intent to step down at the end of my current contract. We jointly agreed to a short-term extension of my contract with the College through June 30, 2018, to allow ample time for a smooth transition to a new executive director.

The timing of this decision is right for me both professionally and personally to explore the next chapter in my career. I have been truly privileged to serve as ACPM’s executive director for the past 12 1/2 years, and be a part of this wonderful organization for the past 18 years. ACPM has had an enormous impact on my career and life, and I have been fortunate to work with so many passionate and exceptional people. I am really looking forward to continuing to serve you and the leadership over the next 6 months, and perhaps even exploring with some of you opportunities for the next chapter in my career.
