Meeting with AMA Staff to Coordinate Efforts on Capitol Hill
ACPM staff met with Todd Askew and Heather Smith from the AMA to strategize how the AMA will proceed with the support it has pledged to promote preventive medicine residency training. In June, the AMA House of Delegates passed Resolution 324, which called for the AMA to work with ACPM and other preventive medicine organizations to lobby for PMR funding. The AMA agreed to help lobby key Congressional members, and to mobilize medical students at the grassroots level.

Working with Congressional Staff to Secure Preventive Medicine Training Funding
ACPM staff met with Senator Harkin’s staff to discuss the next steps on obtaining funding for preventive medicine residency training. Senator Harkin currently has a bill proposed (S.1074) that calls for $43 million to support training. ACPM and the Senator’s staff planned strategies to gain bipartisan support for preventive medicine training and agreed to work together to move this agenda forward.

Lobbying on Capitol Hill for Preventive Medicine Residency Funding
ACPM staff met with Congressional staff from several key members of the House of Representatives to share ACPM’s legislative strategy on preventive medicine residency funding. The response received for the strategy was generally very positive, and many of the Congressional staff recognized the need for preventive medicine specialists. ACPM staff is working to build broad bipartisan, and bicameral support for PM residency funding.

Update on Department of Justice Lawsuit against Tobacco Industry
ACPM staff participated in a conference call hosted by the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights and National African American Tobacco Prevention Network. These are the six organizations that were granted their motion to intervene in the lawsuit on July 22. Matt Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids delivered a brief overview of the case and informed callers of the latest developments in the Department of Justice lawsuit.

Covering Kids & Families Back-to-School Campaign

ACPM staff attended the national launch event of the 2005 Covering Kids & Families Back-to-School Campaign.  This campaign, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is dedicated to informing parents with uninsured children that they may be eligible for health care coverage under Medicaid or SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program).  Speakers at the event included US Surgeon General Richard Carmona.  Covering Kids & Families is partnering with many organizations to promote the message that low-cost and free health care coverage is available and that parents can call 1 (877) KIDS-NOW to get more information.  ACPM is a proud partner organization to this important movement.
