American College
of Preventive Medicine
Report of the
Graduate Medical Education (GME) Committee
November 2002
Chair: Judy Rubin, MD, MPH,
FACPM
Staff: Ginger Anderson
Since its report to the Board in
July 2002, the GME Committee has focused on: (1) installing a new
Committee Chair; (2) administering the In-service Exam; (3)
planning the Residency Directors’ Workshop; and (4) finalizing
the assessment tool for residency programs. Current activities are
outlined below.
New GME Committee Chair
Judy Rubin has assumed the role
of GME Committee Chair, previously held by Gary Goldbaum, and
Ginger Anderson has assumed the role of staff for the Committee.
August 2002 In-service Exam
ACPM has contracted with the
University of California at San Diego (UCSD) to conduct the
Preventive Medicine In-service Examination once each year, in
August. Under the agreement, ACPM manages the administrative tasks
of order processing and distribution of results, and assists with
exam question development. UCSD writes exam questions, processes
the completed exams, and performs analysis of the results.
This August, 331 residents from
57 preventive medicine residency programs took the exam. Results
will be distributed to the programs this month. The next exam will
be offered in August 2003.
Initializing Plans for the 10th
Annual Residency Director’s Workshop
A planning committee is currently
being formed for the 10th Annual Residency Directors’
Workshop, which will take place February 18–19, 2003 in San
Diego. The Workshop will feature a presentation by the American
Cancer Society, an update by HRSA, opportunities for residency
directors to share resources, and more.
Assessing Preventive Medicine
Residency Programs
The assessment tool for residency
programs will be finalized and distributed to the residency
programs in November. The tool will be used to gather a standard
set of up-to-date descriptive information from each residency
program and to identify specific activities to enhance training
opportunities for residents and funding for residency programs.
The assessment is expected to be completed in early 2003.
