Based on the 2012 SOPHE Annual Chapter Report, SOPHE Chapter members reported mental health and tobacco use as priority topics for future webinars in 2013 because the connection between mental health and tobacco use continues to rise at an alarming rate while tobacco use continues to be the leading preventable cause of death in the United States annually. Studies find that mental health and tobacco use have a complex relationship as tobacco exposure may aggravate existing mental health issues, and has a multiplicative effect on diabetes complications. In response, National SOPHE organized this webinar to provide participants with a brief description of the relationship of tobacco use and mental health, information to justify the need for tobacco cessation intervention and offer resources for referral and education.
