This session
provides a thorough review of thyroid disease and its relationship
to radiation exposure, particularly to releases of Iodine 131 from
nuclear facilities. Experts discuss thyroid disease—including
its types, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments; the background,
methods, and results of the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study; an
overview of the new ATSDR Case Study in Environmental Medicine on
Iodine 131; and questions and answers from the audience.
At the end of
this session, the user will be able to:
1. Explain the appropriate test for evaluation of the thyroid
nodule and the use and
limitations of thyroid FNA biopsies
2. Explain the utility of T4 suspension of TSH for nodule
therapy
3. Explain the classification, general treatment, and follow-up
of thyroid cancer
4. Discuss the health effects associated with exposure to power
frequency
magnetic fields
5. Summarize the results of the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study
and articulate
the challenges faced in conducting the study the interpreting
the results
6. Explain the evaluation of patients using the three elements
