Program
Description:
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research
(WRAIR) has offered an ACGME-accredited
General Preventive Medicine Residency
Program to military physicians since 1965.
While ensuring that graduates are equipped
to practice public health in both military
and civilian settings, the program
emphasizes population medicine
problem-solving as uniquely applied to
military groups. Thus in addition to the
generic competencies to be achieved
by
preventive medicine specialists, WRAIR
residents are expected to understand and
analyze: (1) epidemiology and control of
infectious disease of military
significance, (2) health aspects of rapid
mobilization (medical threat assessment,
immunization policy, etc.), (3)
organization of military preventive
medicine in garrison and in the deployed
setting, (4) importation of medical
problems from abroad, (5) military-unique
occupational concerns, (6) health concerns
peculiar to basic training (acute
respiratory infections, barracks design),
and (7) legal responsibilities of military
posts regarding local, state and federal
regulations.
All
civilian applicants must enter active duty
before beginning their program. It is also
an Army requirement that all physicians
pursuing Army residency training programs
be United States citizens. Prospective
civilian applicants willing to meet these
stipulations are encouraged to contact the
Army Medical Department personnel
