Program Description: The UCSD-SDSU General Preventive Medicine Residency Program is co-sponsored by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD), Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and the San Diego State University, Graduate School of Public Health (SDSU). The objective of the program is to prepare physicians for academic or service careers in preventive medicine and public health. The program offers accredited training in two of the three years required for board eligibility. The majority of residents pursue the course work for the MPH over the entire 24-month period of time while concurrently performing their practicum activities in one or more public health and preventive medicine settings. Practicum experiences are offered in one of the following principal areas of emphasis: Clinical Preventive Medicine, College and University Health, Public Health, Academic and Research, Community Oriented Preventive Medicine, and Exercise & Nutrition. All program applicants are required to complete the UCSD-SDSU General Preventive Medicine Residency application process and the separate application package for the SDSU Graduate School of Public Health. Residents receive a stipend of approximately $36,000-38,000 per year, plus appropriate health insurance, vacation and other benefits. There is no charge for the MPH tuition.
