Description:
The New York State Preventive Medicine
Residency Program prepares residents for
leadership roles in public health at the
state and local level, through a close
partnership between the New York State
Department of Health and the University at
Albany (SUNY) School of Public Health. The
program integrates academic training with
extensive exposure to the practice of
public health, embodying the model of
public health education advocated in the
Institute of Medicine's landmark report,
The Future of Public Health. The school's
faculty includes both full-time academics
and practicing public health professionals
from the NYSDOH and other agencies, who
serve as teachers, advisors, mentors, and
role models. The NYSDOH has a
comprehensive array of public health
programs at the cutting edge of public
health in the United States, providing
ideal training opportunities for resident
physicians.
The
academic year coursework leads to a Master
of Public Health (MPH) degree from the
School of Public Health. The practicum
year allows residents to apply their
academic training to current public health
problems by developing, implementing, and
evaluating public health programs.
Practicum rotations provide preventive
medicine residents with hands-on
experience working in a variety of
settings:
-the New
York State Department of Health - one of
the most comprehensive state health
departments in the country, with programs
addressing every major public health
issue;
-the
Albany County Health Department and
Schenectady County Public Health Services
- full-service local health departments
responsible for public health services in
a large mixed urban/suburban/rural area;
-other
opportunities in the area, e.g. the
Eastern New York Occupational and
Environmental Health center, voluntary
health agencies, prison health, advocacy
organizations.
The
choice of practicum rotations and projects
is tailored to residents' individual
interests and goals.
The New
York State Preventive Medicine Residency
Program prepares physicians well for
professional careers in preventive
medicine and public health. Upon
graduation, alumni have taken leadership
positions in state and local health
departments, academic centers, and
community-based organizations, working in
the fields of communicable disease
control, bioterrorism preparedness,
maternal and child health, environmental
health, chronic disease prevention, and
mental health.
