Program Description: The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency Program (PH/PMR) has remained accredited since 1957. Our program is one of the oldest residency programs located in a health department. The PH/PMR program has a dedicated staff that works diligently to offer the resident a rewarding training in the PGY2 and PGY3 years (residents may enter at either level). The PH/PMR program recognizes the need to be flexible and encourage our residents to express their ideas or make suggestions regarding program policies. This position has lead to a newly established agreement with a federal agency and has enhanced the quality of practicum training.

Training at a health department offers residents advantageous opportunities required for public health practice. Residents are directly involved with a state organization that sets policies that address community needs and assures the quality of health to its citizens. Residents focus on health promotion and disease prevention and have the unique advantage of working with state agencies that oversee grant programs in Bioterrorism, Health Disparities, Diabetes, Chronic Disease, Asthma, Public Health and Human Services, Epidemiology, Drug Abuse, Mental Health, etc. Our residents have worked directly with programs that have supervised statewide epidemics such as: Anthrax, SARS and the West Nile Virus. This opportunity has supported our mission to "train physicians in the specialty of general preventive medicine and equip them with the skills needed to practice as leaders in governments, academia or clinical medicine." The PH/PMR program has produced a pool of exceptional residents who have stepped into exemplary leadership roles. We have to our success Local Health Officers, Program Directors, Federal Administrators, Pharmaceutical Administrators, Hospital Administrators, Consultants, and more recently, Chief of Epidemiology.

Our program is confident about the future of public health and our ability to train leaders to join an area of health committed to prevention and health care delivery that will enhance the understanding and effectiveness of future public health leaders.
