Program Description: The Mayo Graduate School of Medicine Preventive medicine residency program strongly emphasizes clinical preventive medicine, clinical epidemiology, health care evaluation, and health care administration.

Clinical (Prerequisite) training involves successful completion of a residency in internal medicine or family medicine. This time may be taken at Mayo Clinic or another institution with accredited internal medicine or family medicine training.

Academic training, if not previously completed, is arranged at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis, where there is a one-year program leading to an M.P.H. degree or equivalent. This school is 80 miles north of the Mayo Clinic. Tuition and salary are paid by Mayo.

The practicum year is done at the Mayo Clinic and involves direct patient care in the Division of Preventive Medicine, elective and required rotations in other divisions, public health experience in the Olmsted Community Health Department, and participation in seminars, lectures, studies, and projects related to general preventive medicine and public health, clinical epidemiology, health care delivery systems, and health communications. Additional research experience may be arranged following completion of the academic and practicum years.

Rochester, Minnesota, is a community of approximately 100,000 people. Primarily because of Mayo there are over 400,000 visitors annually. Accordingly, the city is rich in cultural, commercial, and recreational activities.
