Program Description: The Preventive Medicine Residency program at Loma Linda University (LLU) started in 1979 as a cooperative effort of the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine. Accepted applicants may enter as PGY1, -2, or -3 residents. Most residents enter the second year and complete the program in two years. The program integrates a Master of Public Health (MPH) curriculum with clinical and administrative Preventive Medicine. The MPH may have an emphasis in health administration, nutrition, epidemiology/statistics, health promotion, environmental health, maternal child health, or international health.

The principle focus of the practicum training is clinical preventive medicine. The Center for Health Promotion at LLU and the Loma Linda Veterans Affairs Medical Center provide the primary clinical preventive medicine experience in cardiac risk intervention, addiction medicine, weight management, smoking cessation, physical fitness, nutrition assessment, executive wellness and international travel. Managed care experience is obtained on rotations at Inland Empire Health Plan and Kaiser Permanente. The local county health departments and a state hospital provide training in traditional public health. Primary care experience is available at local college student health services.

LLU seeks to apply a distinctly Christian orientation to the problems of both personal and public health by integrating the physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects of personal and community issues.
