Program
Description:
The residency program consists of a
two-year academic/practicum program in
Public Health and General Preventive
Medicine. The program is designed to
attract physicians who are already
well-trained clinically, and accepts only
physicians who have already completed a
ACGME accredited clinical residency. The
focus during the residency is on teaching
the physician the practical skills that
are required in carrying out research and
intervening
in health and disease processes in
communities, and in the promotion of
health enhancing behaviors that may lead
to the prevention of disease.
Residents
may focus research and develop and carry
out programs at clinics in hospitals,
neighborhood health clinics, departments
of public health, and other such
facilities that will present them with
hands-on experiences directly related to
preventive medicine and public health
problems. The facilities primarily
involved in training residents are as
follows: (1) the Sections of Preventive
Medicine & Epidemiology and General
Internal Medicine (2) the General Internal
Medicine and Pediatric Sections and the
public health clinics (for the homeless,
HIV, tuberculosis, etc.) at Boston Medical
Center; (3) the General Medicine
Department at the Bedford and Boston VA
hospitals; (4) Boston University School of
Public Health; and (5) the Departments of
Public Health of the City of Boston and
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
