Program
Description:
The residency program prepares graduates
to fill leadership positions as
occupational physicians in government,
academia, corporations, or clinical
practice. The residency is traditionally a
two-year program with academic coursework at the School of Public
Health at the University of Minnesota
leading to an MPH degree. The practicum
experience combines longitudinal
clinical experiences in primary care and
consultation with required rotations in
industry and government. In addition,
residents are required to complete
a research project during the two years of
training. Alternative and flexible
schedules may be arranged to accommodate
special circumstances. All residents
receive salary, full tuition, and
insurance (health, dental, and
malpractice).
We offer
a particularly strong community corporate
experience, which includes rotations with
organizations such as General Mills and 3M Corporation.
Special strength areas also include
environmental and clinical toxicology,
(two faculty members board certified in
medical toxicology); occupational health
services research through collaboration
with the post-graduate Occupational Health
Services Research Program, University of
Minnesota School of Public Health; and
issues related to the care of specific
occupational populations, including New
Americans, and Special Duty populations
(e.g. firefighters, law enforcement,
etc.). Additional training and research
opportunities in these areas are
available, as well as those with the other
sections of the University of Minnesota
School of Public Health (e.g. Toxicology,
Epidemiology, Injury Prevention, etc.).
Admission
requirements include graduation from an
approved medical school and one-year of an
acceptable internship. Preference is given
to applicants who have completed clinical
residency or have comparable work
experience. Applicants must be eligible
for licensure in the state of MN,
including completion of USMLE steps 1-3
within a 7 year period and each step must
be passed within 3 attempts.
The program is fully
accredited by ACGME and is funded, in
part, by NIOSH.
