Thanks to all ACPM members who took the
time to respond to the environmental
health needs assessment survey fielded by
the College. ACPM's Environmental Health
Committee developed the assessment to help
identify the appropriate topic content and
delivery methods for a targeted
educational campaign focusing on two
topics—the health effects of global
climate change and the health effects of
indoor environmental hazards. Through a
grant supported by the CDC's National
Center for Environmental Health (NCEH),
ACPM aims to educate and increase members'
awareness of the two aforementioned topics
through a combination of web-based and
in-person information, education, and
training activities.
The assessment revealed as many as 65% of
respondents spend no time and 31% spend
less than 25% of their typical work day on
issues related to global climate change.
It also revealed that 31% spend no time
and 57% spend less than 25% on issues
related to hazards found in the home and
other indoor environments.
Respondents highlighted food supply and
safety, air quality and respiratory
disease, water scarcity and access to
clean water, disease and transmitting
vectors, and natural disasters as the most
important areas related to global climate
change on which they would like the
College to focus its efforts. Indoor air
pollutants, injuries in or around the
home, occupational injuries, heavy metals,
and pesticides topped the list of indoor
environmental hazards. A diverse array of
comments and perspectives pertaining to
ACPM's role and activities related to
these topic areas were submitted and are
being analyzed by the Environmental Health
Committee.
