Recognizing Waterborne Disease and the Health Effects of Water Pollution: A Physician On-line Reference Guide
Description:
This peer-reviewed educational resource is designed to assist practicing physicians in recognizing, managing, and preventing waterborne disease and the health effects of water pollution in their patients. It also provides a detailed review of the repository of terrorism preparedness information and emergency response resources available to practicing physicians and local health care providers in the event of intentional chemical or biological contamination of water.
Features:
Up to 22 AMA Category 1 CME credits available chapter-by-chapter.

Taking an Exposure History:  Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:
A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features:  Information on toxicants in the home, provides a sample exposure history form, and explains the process and importance of taking an exposure history.

Radiation Exposure From Iodine 131: Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description: A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry provides health care professionals with information and tools to aid in the evaluation of patients potentially exposed to radiation from iodine 131 (I-131).
Features: Information on major sources of I-131 in the environment, major routes of human exposure, important actions to take if an environmental release of I-131 occurs, and more.

Thyroid Disease Management and Radiation Exposure
Description:
This 2.0 hour session, sponsored by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), provides a thorough review of thyroid disease and its relationship to radiation exposure, particularly to releases of Iodine 131 from nuclear facilities.
Features:
Experts discussing thyroid disease—including its types, symptoms, diagnoses, and treatments; the background, methods, and results of the Hanford Thyroid Disease Study; an overview of the new ATSDR Case Study in Environmental Medicine on Iodine 131; and questions and answers from the audience.

Benzene Toxicity:  Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:
A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances, including benzene, in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features:  Information on benzene exposure pathways, physiologic effects, clinical evaluation, and treatment and management.

Lead Toxicity:  Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:  A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances, including lead, in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features: Information on exposure pathways of lead, physiologic effects, clinical evaluation, laboratory evaluation, and treatment and management.

Radon Toxicity:  Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:
A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances, including radon, in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features:  Information on radon exposure pathways, physiologic effects, clinical evaluation, and treatment and management.  Also includes information on radon detection and abatement.

Pediatric Environmental Health: Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:
A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the knowledge of health care providers, especially pediatricians, of the special susceptibilities of children to hazardous substances in the environment and to aid in their evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features: Information on how and why children differ from adults in their susceptibility to environmental hazards, how to apply the knowledge of environmental medicine in the evaluation of well and sick children, identifying parental occupation and hobbies as a part of the environmental history, and identifying additional sources of environmental health information.

Case Studies in Environmental Medicine:  Pediatric Environmental Health; Environmental Triggers of Asthma
Description:
A 90-minute session developed by the American College of Preventive Medicine and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry that provides an overview of pediatric environmental health and environmental triggers of asthma.
Features:  Presentations given during a session at the Preventive Medicine 2003 conference, held February 19-23, 2003 in San Diego, California.

Pediatric Toxicology
Description:
An interactive case study that emphasizes the public health aspects of pediatric environmental illness.  The cases are intended for providers involved in the care of children as well as public health practitioners and other health care providers with an interest in environmental health and medicine.  This case study is offered by the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Great Lakes Center for Children's Environmental Health.
Features:  Information regarding the diagnosis and management of environmental illness is presented within the context of a clinical scenario.

Asthma Prevention in Children
Description:
This session, sponsored by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), presents the findings of a systematic evidence review on asthma prevention and reviews the key elements of ACPM’s draft asthma prevention practice guidelines for clinicians, focusing on environmental and other preventive measures.
Features:
The authors of the guidelines discuss their systematic review of scientific evidence and their practice experience gained in a community-based project in California.  The basic elements of a separate set of consumer guidelines that support environmental and clinical prevention of asthma among young children are also discussed. Clinical and environmental experts provide reaction and comments to the guidelines as part of a discussion among session attendees.

Environmental Triggers of Asthma: Case Studies in Environmental Medicine
Description:
A case study developed by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment, including those that trigger asthma, and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients.
Features: Information on various environmental factors that trigger asthma exacerbations, interventions available to mitigate environmental factors in triggering asthma, sources of information on the impact of environmental factors on patients with asthma, and sources of information on asthma management.
