Preventive Medicine 2001
Fundraising for Preventive
Medicine 2001 has been the primary focus of development activities
in recent months. A goal of raising $125,000 has been set for the
meeting. To put this in perspective, just over $50,000 was raised
for PREVENTION 2000, and this amount was in effect split between
ACPM and ATPM.
As of the end of October, ACPM
had received funding commitments of $46,500 has been raised for
the conference. The commitments are as follows:
Bayer Corporation $15,000
Merck & Co., Inc. $10,000
Quaker Oats $10,000
March of Dimes $5,000
SmithKline Beecham $5,000
Optum $1,500
Preventive Medicine 2001 Planning
Committee members and staff continue to contact other potential
corporate sponsors. In addition, formal conference grant proposals
have been submitted to CDC and AHRQ. The CDC proposal has been
approved although it has not yet been funded. The AHRQ proposal is
still pending. Discussions have also been held with HRSA about
providing support for the meeting.
Cooperative Agreement Update
- Our HRSA cooperative agreement
has been renewed. Although the cooperative agreement has been
renewed at level funding, we have requested additional funding
to carry out additional activities to strengthen the
preventive medicine workforce, including convening a group of
stakeholders to begin developing a research plan to enumerate
the preventive medicine workforce. We have good reason to
believe that our efforts to obtain supplemental funding will
be successful.
- Our ATSDR cooperative
agreement has been renewed. Funding has been reduced, however,
because the Department of Energy, which contributed funds to
ATSDR’s cooperative agreement program last year, has
withdrawn its support from the program.
Corporate Support
- We have received a $60,000
educational grant from Procter & Gamble to support
research into issues concerning handwashing and/or the public
health impact of consumer-oriented antibacterial products.
Erica Frank is leading our discussions with P&G regarding
the exact use of these funds as well as regarding our future
relationship with P&G. While P&G initially contacted
the College regarding our interest in supporting handwashing
education in conjunction with P&G’s release of new
handwashing products, our interest is also in identifying
opportunities to work jointly with P&G on other preventive
medicine issues.
- Merck has given the College a
grant of $15,000 to support web site development. Thanks go to
Steve Teutsch for facilitating a strong relationship between
Merck and the College.
Other Revenue-Generating
Activities
- We have contracted with a
company called Applied Recruitment Technologies to develop an
online service for posting preventive medicine job
opportunities. ACPM will receive a portion of the revenues
resulting from employers listing their job openings.
- We have been negotiating with
a health internet company to provide ACPM-developed and/or
ACPM-approved information to the site. Under the terms of this
not quite finalized contract, ACPM would receive a set fee to
participate in this endeavor.
- We have also been negotiating
with a company to digitally capture sessions at our annual
meeting. The sessions would then be available online and would
be accessible for a subscription fee. ACPM would receive a
portion of the subscription and sponsorship fees received.
Future of Preventive Medicine
Fund
As of October 31, 2000 we had
raised $9,925 from 45 members’ generous contributions. The
contributions continue to come into the office. In late November,
we plan to send out a mailing seeking additional support for the
Future of Preventive Medicine Fund.
President’s Society
We have added twelve new members
to the President’s Society this year. There are now 25 ACPM
members who have contributed at least $500 to become a part of
this distinguished group. As determined at the last Development
Committee meeting, a $500 contribution earns an individual a three
year membership in the President’s Society, while a $5,000
contribution garners a lifetime membership. The President’s
Society members are listed below:
