American College of Preventive Medicine
Development Committee
November 1999
Chair: Hugh Tilson
Staff: Jud Richland
Maureen Crane
Charitable contributions to the
College continued to increase in Fiscal Year 1999. Contributions
totaled $15,721 in 1999 compared to $10,450 in 1998. Special
thanks go to Jonathan Fielding for his generous challenge grant.
Thanks also go to the many ACPM members, including ACPM Board
members, who met Dr. Fielding’s challenge and caused him to make
good on his entire grant!
A mailing will be sent to all
College members later this year seeking charitable contributions.
President’s Society
The first President’s Society
breakfast was held in March at the PREVENTION meeting. Over half
of the fifteen President’s Society donors, each of whom
contributed at least $500 attended the breakfast. The President’s
Society donors include:
E. Jackson Allison, Jr.
Robert Carr
Roy DeHart
Halley Faust
Jonathan Fielding
Robert Harmon
Linda Louise Hill
James Kotsanos
Douglas Lloyd
Gary Noble
F. Douglas Scutchfield
William Shaw
Penny Stern
Hugh Tilson
The breakfast was a wonderful
social occasion as well as an opportunity for many people who care
about the College to share ideas on how the dollars raised through
the President’s Society can be used to advance the field.
Suggestions included using the President’ Society contributions
for, among other things, a 50th anniversary celebration for the
College (in 2004), an award, an internship, or ACPM’s Careers
Initiative. Ultimately, members decided not to rush into any
decisions about how the funds should be used.
Grant Proposals
The Development Committee has
played a key role in initiating grant proposals for the College.
For example, Ron Davis has led the College’s efforts to gain
funding to develop a national tobacco cessation certification
program. Hugh Tilson has played a key role in shaping ACPM’s
proposal to CDC, about which we continue to be optimistic.
Corporate Sponsors
The Development Committee has
long stressed the importance of establishing partnerships with
private corporations to support important College activities. The
time spent developing proposals to federal agencies over the last
several months limited the amount of effort devoted to corporate
fundraising efforts. The Development Committee believes strongly
that relationships with private corporations should not unduly
influence, or appear to influence, College activities. At its
upcoming meeting, the Committee will scrutinize the draft policy
statement governing ACPM’s relationship with corporate sponsors.
