Education Committee Report
May 2001
Chair: Don Gemson
Staff:Jessica Cafarella, Ginger Anderson
GME Subcommittee Chair: Gary
Goldbaum
CME Subcommittee Chair: Arthur
Frank
Since the February conference
call of the Education Committee and in-person meetings of the GME
and CME Subcommittees, ACPM education activities have focused on:
(1) developing a "best practices" manual for preventive
medicine residency programs; (2) developing four Internet-based
modules for CME credit; (3) jointly sponsoring educational
activities with other medical associations; (4) developing new
practices and tools to continuously improve ACPM’s educational
programs; and (5) planning the 2001 Board Review Course. Current
activities and upcoming plans in these areas are outlined below.
Best Practices Manual
The GME Subcommittee has
continued work on the draft "best practices" manual that
was reviewed at the Eighth Annual Preventive Medicine Residency
Directors Workshop, held in conjunction with Preventive Medicine
2001. The manual is expected to be completed early this summer. It
will be posted on ACPM’s website, as well as distributed
directly to all preventive medicine programs. The manual contains
sections on affiliation agreements; administrative requirements
and policies; RAC and GMEC; rotations; formal skill testing and
board performance; and evaluations. The manual also incorporates
the new Program Information Form (PIF) for preventive medicine,
which was released by the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for
Preventive Medicine in April, 2001.
Internet-Based CME Modules
ACPM’s CME program has entered
the Internet Age. Four projects involving CME credit that can be
earned over the World Wide Web are in the works, including the
adaptation of the 2001 Annual Meeting for online viewing. An
educational module on the role of the physician in injury control,
using car crashes as an example, is being developed with the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the
American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Final content
review is being performed for the Indoor Air Quality module the
College is developing with the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and marketing will begin shortly. Finally, work on the
online adaptation of Physicians for Social Responsibility’s (PSR)
conference, "Safe Drinking Water: What Every Health Care
Provider Should Know", as part of ACPM’s cooperative
agreement with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease
Registry (ATSDR), is nearing completion.
Joint Sponsorship Activities
In addition to the Internet
projects, the College recently has jointly sponsored the 30th
Annual Sports Medicine Symposium with the American Medical
Athletic Association (AMAA). ACPM also plans to jointly sponsor
the annual meeting of the National Association of County and City
Health Officials (NACCHO) and an educational session by the
American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) to
coincide with the annual meeting of the American Public Health
Association (APHA) in October.
Practices and Tools for Program
Improvement
The CME Subcommittee intends to
focus in the near future on planning and implementing actions to
continuously improve the quality of the educational programs ACPM
offers. To that end, the Subcommittee has revitalized its role in
selecting and developing the educational activities with which the
College involves itself, reviewing every program from the early
planning stages to completion. Over the next several months, the
Subcommittee will also work to develop standardized, but
adaptable, survey tools to be used to evaluate and improve ACPM’s
educational programs. In addition to implementing practices and
tools to improve future programs, the Subcommittee intends to plan
one in the form of an educational session in conjunction with the
2002 APHA meeting. The purpose will be to provide an update on the
specialty of Preventive Medicine, with the intent of increasing
awareness of the College and encouraging membership.
Board Review Course
The Review Course Planning
Committee, chaired by Gershon Bergeisen, MD, MPH, FACPM, and Col.
Eric Evenson, MD, MPH, FACPM, is working to fill the few remaining
faculty vacancies and finalize the schedule for the 2001 Review
Course, scheduled to take place in Denver, Colorado, from August
25 through 29th. The course has been publicized to the
ACPM membership, to those who took the course in 2000 but were not
listed as having passed the Board exam, to everyone who has been
approved by the Board to take the exam, and to others.
Registrations are beginning to come in and the pace is expected to
quicken as the date of the course draws nearer.
