Review Course

An important change has been made to the Review Course faculty. Jim Guillory, DO, MPH has agreed to serve as Co-chair of the Course, along with Eric Evenson, who has served in the role for the past several years. Dr. Guillory has been involved with the Course, as the presenter of the healthcare structure, financing, and quality section, for many years and is welcomed in his new role. Gershon Bergeisen, MD, is stepping down as Co-chair of the Review Course after ten years of service. He will receive a Presidential Citation at the awards banquet in San Antonio for his outstanding service.

Committee Changes

One of Dr. Guillory’s first actions as Review Course Co-chair was to accept the CME Committee’s invitation to join the Committee to represent the Review Course. Since the date of the October Board meeting, the CME Committee, previously working under the Education Committee, has operated independently. The new structure has prompted the Committee to examine its processes and membership to best serve its purposes. One of the most important purposes of the CME Committee is to ensure the College’s activities comply with its CME accreditation requirements. To that end, the Committee has determined that it will seek appropriate representation for each CME offering, a practice it has begun by involving Dr. Guillory, and will continue by involving a member of the IT Committee as the College continues to offer CME programs on-line.

Internet-based Education

CME Certificate requests are being received and processed for the College’s current on-line CME Center offerings and will likely increase with the mid-February opening of the newest module, The Physician’s Role in Injury Control, a program being developed jointly by ACPM, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). In addition to on-line resources that award CME credit, the CME Committee is collaborating with the Environmental Health Education Advisory Committee and the Environmental Health Committee to build an on-line environmental health education resource center under the ATSDR cooperative agreement.

Maintenance of Certification

Four applications for approval of CME modules for Maintenance of Certification have been submitted to the ABPM, three of them Internet-based. Among them are Drinking Water and Disease: What Every Health Care Provider Should Know, Indoor Air Pollution: Detecting Illness, Educating Patients, and The Physician’s Role in Injury Prevention. The fourth application was submitted for the Healthcare Quality Improvement Institute, to be attended either in person in February or, later, by audiotape with accompanying paper materials. ACPM is awaiting notice of approval for all four applications.
