Mid-Atlantic Regent
Dr. Salive is Mid-Atlantic Regent of the American
College of Preventive Medicine and a past recipient of the
ACPM Distinguished Service Award. He serves as Trustee of
the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and has been
selected as Vice Chair for General Preventive Medicine and
Public Health beginning in 2009. He is a Captain in the US
Public Health Service (PHS), and during his 20 year career
he has held leadership positions with the Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug
Administration. Currently he is Director of the Division
of Medical and Surgical Services within the Coverage and
Analysis Group of CMS. The Division is responsible for
developing and maintaining national coverage decisions for
all Medicare beneficiaries using a rigorous and open
evidence-based process. The specific clinical areas
considered by this Division include preventive medicine,
surgery, cardiology, and implantable medical devices. His
work in developing Medicare coverage of new and innovative
preventive services was recognized with the PHS
Outstanding Service Medal. He previously served as acting
deputy leader of the prevention scientific research group
in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, NIH,
where he was project officer of the clinical trial
demonstrating lives saved by public access defibrillation
in community settings. He has developed and led research
initiatives in several areas including outcomes research,
Alzheimer disease etiology, vaccine safety, and
translation of clinical research into primary care
practice. He earned undergraduate and medical degrees from
the University of Michigan and completed his preventive
medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University.
