ACPM response to
mammography recommendations

Fallout from the recent US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations around mammography screening has continued, including calls for the disbandment of the Task Force, congressional hearings, and extended media coverage.  With multiple pundits, experts, and advocates lining up on both sides of the issue to be heard, ACPM has been actively responding on several fronts.

In addition to its initial press release and media interviews supporting the USPSTF findings, as reported in the November 19 edition of ACPM Headlines, ACPM worked closely with the Partnership for Prevention to prepare and submit a sign-on letter to key congressional leaders in advance of a House subcommittee hearing on the topic.  The letter addressed several myths about the Task Force being propagated in the media.  ACPM also reached out to leaders of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Journal of Preventive Medicine to secure their organizational endorsements of the letter.

ACPM President-elect Miriam Alexander also submitted an opinion-editorial column on behalf of the College that was published in the Friday, December 4, edition of the Baltimore Sun.  The op-ed piece aimed to set the record straight about the purpose of the task force, its methods, and the appropriate interpretation of the mammography recommendations.

In response to the unwarranted vilification of and ongoing threats to the Task Force, considered to be the gold standard for evidence-based analysis of and guidelines on the use of clinical preventive services, ACPM encourages members to make your voice heard.  ACPM has prepared a set of talking points for this debate, and encourages you to use these talking points to submit commentaries, letters, or op-eds to your own local newspapers or other media outlets in support of the Task Force.  If you need assistance, contact Mike Barry, ACPM executive director, at mbarry@acpm.org.  We also ask that you him send a copy of your submission.
