public health
Premier preventive medicine
meeting
scheduled for February 21-24 in Miami
Uninsured Americans,
pandemic flu, obesity, health care quality, HIV, vaccine
development, and public health preparedness are among the
top issues and concerns preventive medicine and public
health leaders will address as they gather at the American
College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM)’s annual meeting,
February 21-24, at the InterContinental Miami Hotel.
Preventive Medicine
2007, the four-day meeting of scientific sessions,
poster presentations, panel discussions, and interactive
workshops, is expected to draw more than 700 physicians
and other health care professionals.
Highlights for the 2007
conference include:
- J. Michael McGinnis,
MD, KBS Guest Lecturer, will deliver the keynote speech
titled "Obesity: Preventive Medicine Again at the
Frontier." Currently a Senior Scholar at the Institute
of Medicine and formerly with the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation and US Public Health Service, Dr. McGinnis
has spent much of his career as a leader in shaping
national policy focused on disease prevention and health
promotion.
- Carolyn Clancy, MD
AHRQ Director, and Steve Woolf, MD former US Preventive
Services Task Force member, will talk about quality of
care and translating research into reality.
- John Nelson, MD, MPH,
former president of the AMA, and Kenneth Thorpe, MD of
Emory University, will provide diverse perspectives on
covering the uninsured.
- RADM Kenneth P.
Moritsugu, MD, Acting Surgeon General, and Jon Krohmer,
MD, deputy chief medical officer for the Department of
Homeland Security, will talk about public health
preparedness and the all-hazards approach.
- Hard-hitting, half-day
institutes will help attendees hone their skills in
outbreak management, delivery of preventive services,
prevention and management of indoor air pollutants, and
use of other Preventive Medicine tools.
- Task Force experts
will share the latest evidence and recommendations in
clinical and community preventive services.
- A variety of
government and industry representatives will offer
solutions to worksite needs at the Preventive Medicine
2007 Tradeshow.
Topics to be discussed
during the meeting will fall into five major areas: public
health practice, clinical preventive medicine, healthcare
quality improvement, prevention policy, and teaching
preventive medicine.
Preventive Medicine
2007 will be convened jointly with Medical Quality
2007, the annual conference of the American College of
Medical Quality. Medical Quality 2007 will address
emerging issues in healthcare quality improvement and
