GME Funding Strategy

In December, ACPM staff continued to meet with congressional staff to discuss a line-item funding strategy for Preventive Medicine graduate medical education.  In the past two months, 8 senators and 4 representatives from both political parties have received an informational briefing regarding our legislative strategy.  The ACPM steering committee has been formed and its first meeting was held on December 17.

Pfizer Breakfast Briefing with Speaker Charlie Cook
(The Cook Political Report)

Pfizer hosted guest speaker Charlie Cook to discuss the 2004 election results in a post-election briefing.  Among the topics discussed were how the election results may affect the decisions made by the new Congress and the President.  Additionally, the issue of Healthcare in politics was touched upon, and it was mentioned that once some of the more immediate issues are addressed, that Healthcare would be brought back to the forefront.

Childhood and Youth Overweight and Obesity

Thanks to ACPM Fellow Jim Guillory for agreeing to represent ACPM on an AMA Expert Committee to develop recommendations on the assessment, prevention, and treatment of child and youth overweight and obesity.  The committee over the next 12-15 months will develop white papers that will review the latest science and evidence base for childhood obesity interventions.  CDC and HRSA are supporting the committee.

National Violent Death Reporting System

The Pfizer Resident in Health Policy and Preventive Medicine represented ACPM at a National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) meeting hosted by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  NVDRS currently operates in 13 states with CDC-sponsored cooperative agreements.  Additional states will be added in 2005, with plans to expand to a national system.  More information is available at www.cdc.gov/ncipc/profiles/nvdrs/facts.htm.

International Trade Effects on Medical Services

The AMA sponsored a meeting of constituent specialty societies to discuss the health implications of free trade agreements.  The AMA Board of Trustees Report 18 (A-04), based on a resolution cosponsored by ACPM, provided background information for a presentation by legal counsel that explained the implications for medicine and public health, including tobacco and alcohol sales.  A meeting with the U.S. Trade Representative will be organized in the near future.

National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Meeting

The Pfizer Resident in Health Policy and Preventive Medicine at ACPM attended this annual meeting sponsored by HRSA.  Seminars included personnel management, developing surge capacity, and state initiatives for preparedness planning and pharmaceutical stockpiling.

Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) Meeting
HPNEC met to discuss Title VII funding issues and upcoming reauthorization concerns.  Constituent members of HPNEC, including ACPM, will hold a strategy meeting in January.  ACPM has submitted comments in advance for this meeting, including suggestions to revise metrics used for program evaluation.

Women's Health

ACPM staff and member Dawn M. Jacobson, MD, MPH, attended a half-day forum in Washington, DC to discuss the success and challenges in prevention and health promotion related to women's health in the United States. Speakers addressed ongoing national public sector and health plan initiatives on topics such as smoking cessation, physical activity among older women, and mammography. The forum was sponsored by the National Institute for Health Care Management with support from HRSA/MCHB.
