Medical Student Section
Membership Benefits
Annual Meeting:
This meeting will be held
February 20-23, 2008 in Austin, TX and
will concentrate on five primary issue
areas: Public Health, Prevention Policy,
Quality Improvement/E-Health &
Informatics, Clinical Preventive
Medicine, and Career Development.
Medical students are
welcome to participate in all ACPM
programming as well as special sessions
on residency programs, career
development, and other training
opportunities. The MSS meets both
formally and informally with residents,
physicians, and guest speakers. We
arrange round-table discussions, hold
national elections, and present at the
poster session.
The meeting registration
fee is reduced for medical students and
residents. As an MSS member, we will
assist in your search to secure funding
to attend, as well as assist with
money-saving travel and lodging
arrangements. For more information on
the meeting, please visit
www.preventivemedicine2008.org.
Networking:
Officers of the MSS are
always available to help you locate and
contact Preventive Medicine physicians
in your region or in specialties that
you would like to know more about. In
addition, we can connect you with
residents, residency program directors,
and other students who have similar
interests.
We serve as a conduit of
information about training programs,
elective rotations, and other
opportunities to pursue Preventive
Medicine and Public Health. The MSS
collaborates and corresponds with many
medical student organizations at both
local and national levels, including
AMSA, AMA, APHA, AAMC, PSR, SNMA, and
IFMSA. We gather and disseminate
information through multiple channels to
help you connect with students all over
the country.
The MSS has also
developed a Google Group to give active
members an opportunity to exchange ideas
and network on a daily basis. To join
our group, click on the MSS Listserv link on
the left-hand side of the MSS Homepage.
The MSS and Young
Physicians Section (YPS) run a mentoring
program that will help link medical
student members of ACPM with experienced
Preventive Medicine physicians. MSS
members are welcome to search the
database of mentors and contact
physicians who are working in an area
that interests them. More information
is located under the members only
section.
-
Preventive Medicine Interest Groups (PMIGs)
We enable ambitious MSS
members to start PMIGs at their
schools. By linking current groups with
interested students, we help spread and
share ideas amongst ourselves. The MSS
will also solicit help from residents,
faculty, and staff at your institution
to help raise awareness of and interest
in Preventive Medicine through PMIGs.
Publications:
-
The American Journal of Preventive
Medicine (AJPM)
ACPM-MSS membership includes your own
electronic journal subscription to the
American Journal of Preventive Medicine
(AJPM). This is a fantastic resource
for students and provides specific
examples of how Preventive Medicine is
being practiced today.
Our peer-reviewed journal
is published ten times per year and
features original articles and reviews.
You may choose to receive
this electronic newsletter every other
week. It highlights recent happenings
at the College, developments in
preventive medicine, and ACPM member
activities.
Representation:
The ACPM actively and
aggressively represents the interests of
Preventive Medicine on Capitol Hill.
The MSS will raise your awareness of
issues as well as outline what you can
do to contribute to these efforts.
ACPM members represent
the College and the field on numerous
national scientific task forces,
committees, and coalitions. Interested
students are strongly encouraged to run
for leadership positions within the MSS;
officers are elected to a one-year term
at the Annual Meeting.
