Developing Informed Decision Making Materials for Prostate Cancer Screening Decisions

Overview

ACPM has received funding from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion to develop materials that will promote and enhance informed decision making for men considering prostate cancer screening decisions and their providers.The decision aids will: 

  1. Incorporate information about benefits and harms of screening, and patient values
  2. Include consideration of individual patient risks
  3. Include both provider tools/materials and patient tools/materials
  4. Facilitate a dialogue among patients and their providers to promote shared decision making based on best available information regarding benefits, harms, and individual risks

Following individuals serve on the Expert Panel 

ACPM and CDC have assembled a small panel of experts to serve as advisers to the project:

The panel includes experts:

  • In prostate cancer and decision aids to discuss current evidence and content in developing decision aids
  • In patient communication to examine options for modality (web app, videos, devices, etc.) and discuss considerations related to patient communication, health literacy, etc.
  • Representing the clinical provider community to discuss needs, facilitators, and barriers to providers using decision aids in primary care settings. 

Upcoming Project Deliverable: 

ACPM will provide CDC with a pilot-tested shared decision-making tool for prostate cancer screening for use in the clinic environment.  The tool will be a paper-based tool and include a workflow guide and implementation manual. (Expected June 30, 2018)
