Reviews Past Year in RPS
by Samuel Peik, Past President,
RPS |
|
This year the RPS experienced some
exciting new developments. Our major accomplishment involved
publishing a monthly newsletter (which you are now reading), which covers
section news, policy issues, and current events relevant to Preventive Medicine
residents and ACPM. We also improved communication through
expanded use of the section's Facebook site and policy statements and comments
on several issues important to RPS.
The Governing Council also
assisted in the development of sessions and social activities for PM 2011, which
were highly successful. Collaboration between the MSS, RPS, and
YPS was intensified through joint efforts, including newsletters and the
production of a webinar featuring Preventive Medicine at AMSA's National Primary
Care Week. Partnership was initiated with the resident section of
the National Specialty Society for Community Medicine, our parallel organization
in Canada. The section also experienced a modest growth in
membership, and now numbers over 250 members.
As I officially pass on the duties
of the GC to the new officers, I am excited to see these new developments
continued and look forward to seeing what new initiatives the council
develops. In my opinion the RPS has never been stronger or more
active. Thanks to everyone who made this year a
success!

You might be a Young Physician
by Patrick Keller, Committee
Chair, YPS |
All members and affiliates of the
ACPM are members of the Young Physician's Section (YPS) if they are within 8
years of graduating their last residency or under 40 years old. If
ACPM does not have a member's date of birth or date of residency completion on
file, that member might not be informed they are a YPS member. YPS
membership comes without any application or extra cost.
The YPS represents the interests
of young physicians to the ACPM board through the position of YPS Regent.
The YPS also contributes to the careers track at the annual
conference and works jointly with the Resident and Medical Student sections to
organize speakers, and social events.
As YPS gets underway this year we
find the field of preventive medicine under great strain and experiencing
challenges as well as opportunities. We hope to build on the
relationships and programs built by last year's YPS and work in concert with the
other ACPM committees. We also hope to get to know the membership
and reach out to understand the needs and issues that intertwine with your
practice, career opportunities, and the future of our specialty.
Please contact us with any interest or issues you wish us to
address.
It is not too late for you to get
involved. The YPS Committee met and elected officers during the
recent ACPM meeting in San Antonio. While the current officer
positions are filled there are several other committee members who are
enthusiastic about preventive medicine and currently serving the committee
without an elected title. If you are also interested in serving on
the YPS committee or have any questions please send me a message.

Join ACPM Committees! |
One of the best ways you can get
involved in ACPM is to join one of the many available committees.
In particular, there is a need for volunteers on the Preventive Medicine
2011 Planning Committee. RPS Member Raul Mirza has taken
the chair of the Career Development sub-track and is looking for members to
help. The task of this track is to develop programming for
sessions at PM 2012 that will be of interest to medical students, residents, and
young physicians.
If
interested, contact Raul at raul.mirza@us.army.mil. Other ACPM
committees can be found on the ACPM Website. We
encourage you to join committees to make a difference in the college and the
specialty!
