Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in collaboration with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, are conducting a five-year, large-scale randomized controlled trial to test the effect of a concentrated cocoa extract and multivitamin supplements in reducing risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. Preventive medicine specialists are encouraged to lend expertise to the Cocoa Supplement & Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) design or refer patients to participate.
ACPM Advisory Council Submits Recommendations on Proposed Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program

ACPM formed the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) Advisory Council to respond to a CMS notice of proposed rulemaking on the Medicare expansion of the DPP model (CMS-1654). The Council—composed of members with expertise in prediabetes and the delivery of the DPP, including Kaylan Baban, Ayanna Buckner, Michele Etling, Elizabeth Joy, Shaylona Kirk, Nuria Lopez-Pajares, Heather Readhead, Franciso Tejeda—submitted a public response to Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt detailing recommended changes to be incorporated into the final rule to ensure optimal implementation and long-term success of the program. ACPM thanks the Council members for their service in producing and submitting these recommendations to CMS.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded $6.8 million to national public health partners—including ACPM—to support Zika response. The funding is being distributed by CDC's Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support through an existing cooperative agreement and will help enhance surge capacity for Zika case identification and mosquito surveillance.
