James Mancuso, MD, MPH, FACPM
Dr. James Mancuso hails from Boston's North Shore and is married (Kathy) with
three boys, ages 15, 11 and 10 (Alex, Luke, Jake). After finishing high school,
he enlisted in the infantry and was stationed in Germany, where he deployed with
the 3rd Armored Division during Operation Desert Storm. After completing his
enlistment, he went to college at UMass/Boston, graduating with a BS in
Chemistry in 1994, followed by medical school at the Uniformed Services
University of the Health Sciences in 1998. He did his internship at William
Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX, followed by a residency in General
Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research, in Silver Spring, MD, including a Master of Public Health degree from
Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. After completing his residency training,
he was stationed at Fort Stewart as the Chief of Preventive Medicine. During
that time, he deployed with the 3rd Infantry Division to Iraq as part of
Operation Iraqi Freedom. His next assignment was in Landstuhl, Germany as the
Chief of Epidemiology for the Center for Health Promotion and Preventive
Medicine-Europe (CHPPM-Europe). During his assignment in Landstuhl, he also
deployed to Africa for a military MEDFLAG mission, as well as to
Pakistani-controlled Kashmir with the 212th MASH in 2005-6 as part of the
earthquake relief efforts. He then attended the Uniformed Services University
again for 3 years to work on a Doctorate in Public Health, with his dissertation
evaluating tuberculosis control in the US Military. In 2009, he started in his
current position as the residency director for the Preventive Medicine residency
program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Since then, he has
continued his research and public health focus on TB, HIV, and public health
education.
