Conference Call, Meeting #1
1:00 – 2:00
MEETING SUMMARY
Participants
David Katz (Chair), Mike Barry (Staff), Jennifer Bretsch
(Staff), Anand Chabra, Deborah Cohen, Munish Khaneja, Sreedhar
Mandayam (ACPM Resident), Gil Paradis, Jud Richland (Staff), Kees
Rietmeijer, Nancy Sheehan, Spence Turner, Eileen Yamada, Audrey
Yowell (HRSA/MCHB).
I. Welcome and Introductions
David Katz called the Committee to order at 1:05 PM. He
welcomed and thanked the Committee members and led the
introductions. Audrey Yowell, Project Officer for ACPM’s
adolescent health grant with HRSA/MCHB, introduced the Partners in
Program Planning for Adolescent Health (PIPPAH) grant program. As
a PIPPAH grantee, ACPM is an integral partner in promoting a
national adolescent health agenda, joining other organizations
representing the disciplines of medicine, nursing, nutrition, law
pediatric dentistry, school health, and social work.
II. Project Summary
Jud Richland and Jennifer Bretsch summarized ACPM’s four-year
adolescent health project. They noted that in May 2001 ACPM’s
Board of Regents passed a formal resolution calling on ACPM to
take a leadership role in promoting adolescent health issues. This
new initiative provides an opportunity to integrate adolescent
health issues into the work of ACPM in the short-term and can lay
the groundwork for activities beyond the four-year grant. This
project has a number of activities which include: hosting a
Preventive Medicine Coalition on Adolescent Health; holding
sessions on adolescent health at the ACPM annual meeting;
convening educational programs on adolescent health via
teleconference; developing policy and practice statements on
adolescent health; establishing a column on adolescent health in
ACPM’s quarterly newsletter; and constructing an adolescent
health section on ACPM’s web site.
III. Role of the Committee
David Katz noted that the Committee members are well suited to
provide guidance and direction for project activities to promote
adolescent health issues based on their experience and expertise.
He mentioned that the Committee would be high functioning with
many tasks to occupy the Committee during the four years. The job
will require from time to time, taking the lead to ensure that a
particular task(s) is accomplished. As a proposed modus operandi,
the Committee will work together to determine its goals and
objectives (function) and then determine the means to reach them
(form).
The Committee briefly discussed the Preventive Medicine
Coalition on Adolescent Health. The purpose of the Coalition is to
promote adolescent health within the field of preventive medicine
by serving as a forum for information sharing, developing new
ideas, and collaboration. A number of prominent organizations have
joined the Coalition and there is no fixed number for this group
but the goal is to have an optimal, functional group. Suggestions
of additional groups to consider were noted (National Medical
Assoc., National Hispanic Medical Assoc., National Assoc. of
Pediatric Nurse Practioners). The Coalition will continue to take
shape once this Committee determines what its goals are and then
think about and discuss what partners are needed in the Coalition,
making sure that we do not duplicate efforts by other
organizations.
IV. Planning for Preventive Medicine 2003 Session
The planning for an annual meeting session is a short-term
priority for this Committee. ACPM will offer a 90-minute session
focused on adolescent health at ACPM’s 2003 annual meeting in
San Diego, CA, February 19-23. The proposed topic for this session
is ‘outcomes from sexual activity,’ which includes STD’s but
may include other relevant issues. The Committee discussed using
the session to provide an overview of adolescent health issues, a
summary of the issues this project and Committee will address, and
time for presentations specifically related to STD’s. Discussion
of the planning and specifics for this session will continue on
the Committee’s listserv to refine concepts and develop specific
learning objectives. It was noted that all but one of the
Committee members plans to attend ACPM’s annual meeting and that
all would be willing to serve on a question and answer panel for
this session.
V. Institutionalizing Adolescent Health at ACPM
David Katz summarized the RFP Enhancing Adolescent Health
Promotion Across Multiple High Risk Behaviors that was
distributed with this meeting’s agenda. He noted that this RFP
provides an opportunity for additional collaboration among
Committee members and he encouraged the members to review it and
think about that possibility for the future. Additional discussion
can take place via the listserv. The RFP is open through 2005.
Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned at 2:11 PM.
